TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn soccer team snapped its' two game losing streak Sunday, defeating the University of Nebraska at Kearney 2-0.
A goal for each half set the pace for the Ichabods, both of them from players scoring their first goals of the season.
Paige Ledesma scored in the 30th minute off of an assist by
Haley Schroeder, when Schroeder's pass led Ledesma to an open space, where she maneuvered past the goalkeeper Ali Hirschman and shot the ball into an open net. Schroeder's assist was her first as an Ichabod, and the goal gave both players three total points for the year.
Kelsi Smith added her first goal of the season in the second half, breaking away and shooting it into Hirschman, then catching the rebound from the save and shooting it in from just outside the six yard box.
The Ichabods gave up just one shot in the first half, none on goal, and held the Lopers to six shots for the game. Goalkeeper
Kaitlin Minnich recorded four saves and posted her third shutout of the season.
The Ichabods will open up their conference portion of the schedule against Fort Hays State University Friday at 8 p.m. at Hays, Kansas. Washburn will end with a nonconference record of 3-2-1.
