TAHLEQUAH, Okla. -- In the waning minutes of regulation Friday night,
Mackenzie Heiman kept the Ichabods in the game as she scored the tying goal in the 87th minute against Northeastern State. The match extended to two full overtimes with neither team scoring and ending in a 1-1 draw. Washburn is now 6-5-2 on the season and 2-2-2 in MIAA play.
Paige Lorenzo got the RiverHawks on the scoreboard first with her goal in the 18th minute. Both Paulina Chavez and Mariah Nicolet received an assist on the score. Returning in net for the Ichabods,
Bailee Russell did her part to mitigate any damage. In the first half alone, she held on to nine saves.
NSU outshot WU 12-6 in the first half and also led in shots on goal 10-2.
Halfway through the second half,
Olivia Grasso and
Mackenzie Heiman both took a shot on goal, but the RiverHawks' keeper was there to make the save. Russell made two additional key saves in the 74th and 83rd minute to keep the game within one score.
With just three minutes remaining in regulation,
Tera Lynch took a corner kick that found Heiman in front of the net who then scored on a header to tie the game 1-1.
In the first overtime, Heiman and
Josie Rimmer were the only players to attempt a shot. Heiman's attempt was a shot on goal, but the RiverHawks' keeper held on for the save and Rimmer's shot went wide right.
The game was stretched to a second overtime.
Emily Munyer had a shot on target in the 105th minute, but again, NSU was able to hold on. The RiverHawks took the last shot of the match in the 108th minute, which went high.
In the end, Northeastern State outshot Washburn 20-17 and led in SOG 13-7. Russell had a solid day in net for the Ichabods as she made 12 saves and allowed just one goal. Heiman took five shots, three of which were on target, and recorded her fourth goal of the season. Lynch dished out her sixth assist of the year and also had a shot on goal.
Olivia Grasso attempted three shots and
Ellie Karloff took two shots, with both having one shot on goal.
The Ichabods travels next to Edmond, Okla., to take on the undefeated Central Oklahoma Bronchos this Sunday, Oct. 14. The matinee matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m.
