TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn soccer was held scoreless for just the second time this season as they fell 4-0 to the Central Missouri Jennies (12-2-1, 6-1-1 MIAA) on Friday night. The Ichabods are now 6-7-2 on the season and 2-4-2 in conference play.
Olivia Grasso recorded the first shot attempt of the game for Washburn just a minute into the match, but the ball went high of the goal. The Ichabod offense fell silent after that for the next 36 minutes, while Central Missouri maintained ball possession and scored in the 20th and 25th minute. In the 37th minute,
Emily Gartner launched a shot, but it also sailed high.
The Jennies led 2-0 at the half. UCM had outshot WU 11-2 and kept the Ichabods from taking a shot on goal. Washburn's keeper,
Bailee Russell, held on for three saves through the first 45 minutes.
Mackenzie Heiman took the first two shots of the second half, with both going wide of the posts. A foul committed by Washburn set up a penalty kick for Jada Scott in the 59th minute. Scott guided the ball past Russell to give the Jennies a 3-0 advantage with her second goal of the evening.
After the goal, the Ichabods got off three shots in the span of five minutes, but couldn't convert them into a goal.
Paige Ledesma fired off a long shot on goal, but it was saved by a diving Jennies' goalkeeper.
The final goal of the match was scored in the 70th minute. Courtney Killian had a strong pass to Garrison Galley to put the game at 4-0.
In the remaining 11 minutes of regulation, Washburn had four shot attempts.
Kati Sneegas and
Jasmine Palmer both took a shot on goal, but again, UCM's keeper held on for the save.
Washburn outshot Central Missouri in the second period, 9-6. At the end of the match, UCM totaled 17 shots to WU's 11. The visitors also led in shots on goal, 9-3.
Nine different Ichabod players took at least one shot on goal. Sneegas and Heiman both attempted two shots for the Ichabods. In net, Russell made five saves in the match.
The Ichabods continue their home stand against the Lindenwood Lions on Sunday, Oct. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
