Washburn Soccer shuts out Lindenwood

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Josie Rimmer scored what proved to be the game winning goal in the second half to help Washburn soccer defeat Lindenwood 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods recorded their sixth shutout victory of the season and improve to 7-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the MIAA.

Neither team was able to score in the first half, even though there were several opportunities. The Lions had the first shot of the match seven minutes in, but Bailee Russell held on for the save. Shortly after, Olivia Grasso and Kelsi Smith had back-to-back shots on goal with no result. The Ichabods didn't allow another shot by their opponent until just two minutes remaining in the first period when Lindenwood took three quick shots, all on goal. Russell stopped each ball and helped the Ichabods head into half with no score.

Washburn outshot Lindenwood 6-4, but all four of the Lions' attempts were on target. The Ichabods recorded two shots on goal.

Josie Rimmer and Tera Lynch both had a shot on goal attempt in the first three minutes after halftime. The duo worked together a few minutes later to break the no score tie. Tera Lynch passed the ball up to Rimmer who beat the goal keeper and found the back of the net from five yards out to give the Ichabods a 1-0 lead.

The Ichabods stifled Lindenwood's offense and held them to just two shot attempts in the second half, while Washburn had 10.

At the end of the match, Washburn led in shots 16-6. They also had an 8-4 advantage in SOG.

After scoring the game winner, Rimmer now has five goals. She also took three shots, with two being on target. Lynch handed out her seventh assist of the season and the 10th of her career. She led the team with four shots, three on net. Grasso, Smith, and Ellie Karloff attempted two shots. In goal for the Ichabods, Russell recorded her first win and made four first half saves.

Washburn is set to play its final home game of the season next Friday, Oct. 26. The seven Ichabod seniors will be recognized before the match against Emporia State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
