Ichabods return home to face RiverHawks on Hall of Fame Saturday

For starters
•   The Washburn Ichabods return home for Hall of Fame Saturday when they will face Northeastern State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
•   Washburn (2-3, 2-3 MIAA) is coming off a 38-7 loss to Missouri Western last time out  on Sept. 29 in St. Joseph which snapped a three-game Ichabod winning streak over the Griffons.
•   The RiverHawks (0-5, 0-5 MIAA) is were topped by Nebraska-Kearney 49-7 last time out and enter the game with a seven-game losing streak dating back to last season. 
 
Washburn/Northeastern State Series notes
•   The Ichabods are 7-1 all-time against the RiverHawks and have won the last six in the series.
•   Washburn and Northeastern State opened the 2016 and 2017 seasons against each other and the Ichabods won 38-19 on Sept. 1, 2016 in Topeka and 31-7 last season on Aug. 31, 2017 in Tahlequah.
•   The RiverHawks lone win came in the second meeting in the series in a 35-30 win on Sept. 24, 1988 in Tahlequah.
•   Washburn is 4-0 in games played in Topeka and 3-1 in games played in Tahlequah.
•   The Ichabods have outscored the RiverHawks 200 to 57 in the last five games - an average of 40.0 to 11.4.

Washburn Ichabod head coach Craig Schurig . . .
• was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001.
• is 112-77 (.599) in his 17th season as the Ichabod head coach.

• has led the Ichabods to three NCAA Playoff appearances and four bowl appearances and three bowl championships.
• led the Ichabods to the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship.
• led the Ichabods to the program's first 10-win season and their first NCAA or NAIA playoff game victory in school history with a win over Abilene Christian during the 2011 season.

•   Robinson is the second former coordinator under Schurig's tutelage to become the head coach of another program in the MIAA, joining Fort Hays State's Chris Brown.

Noting the Ichabods
•   Hunter Browning leads the team with 32.2 yards per game as five different Ichabods are averaging a double-digit yards per game average … Browning made his first start of the season against Missouri Western … as a team the Ichabods are averaging 102.8 yards per game on the ground while allowing 180.0 per contest … Washburn is 10th in the MIAA in rushing offense.
•   Blake Peterson is averaging 202.7 yards per game passing in three starts with three touchdowns completing 48.9 percent of his passes … Mitch Schurig is 46 of 78 passing with four touchdowns averaging 210.7 yards per game … overall the Ichabods are averaging 254.6 yards per game passing.
•   James Brania-Hopp has 32 catches for 556 yards with two scores while averaging 111.2 yards per game receiving … he is also averaging 17.4 yards per catch … Brania-Hopp leads the MIAA in receiving yards per game (111.2), receptions per game (6.4) and total yards (556) and is ranked 11th in the NCAA in receiving yards and 12th in receiving yards per game.
•   Austin Tillman leads the MIAA and the Ichabods with 12.2 tackles per game and Derrick McGreevy is fourth in the league with 10.0 tackles per game … Tillman also leads the team lead with 3.5 tackles for loss.
•   Through five games, the Ichabods have a balanced offensive attack with 178 run plays and 178 pass plays … on third down and long (anything over seven yards) the Ichabods have ran the ball six times and passed it 47 times this season.
•   The Ichabods are ranked ninth in the MIAA in third down conversions moving the chains on 31 of 82 attempts and defensively the Ichabods are ninth in the MIAA in opponent third down conversions limiting foes to 30 of 73 attempts for a 41 percent average … against the Griffons, Missouri Western converted 12 of 15 tries on third down.
•   Washburn is ranked seventh in the MIAA in penalties averaging 7.0 per game for 67.2 yards while opponents are averaging 5.3 penalties per game and 46.0 yards per contest.
•   Washburn is eighth in the MIAA in time of possession averaging 28:54 per game.
•   Austin Tillman is ranked fifth in the nation in total tackles at 12.2 per game and Derrick McGreevy is ranked 37th in the nation at 10.0 tackles per game.
Derrick McGreevy's 256 tackles is 13th on the all-time chart at Washburn.
Austin Tillman's 254 career tackles sit 14th on the all-time chart at Washburn.
 
By the numbers
•  33  Number of combined interceptions by Cary Williams (11) and Fletcher Terrell (22) in their playing days at Washburn who are going in the Hall of Fame this weekend

Noting the RiverHawks
•   The RiverHawks are coached by former Washburn assistant Rob Robinson who is starting his fourth season as Northeastern State's head coach. He has several members of his coaching staff who played and coached at Washburn. Robinson spent 12 seasons at Washburn including four seasons as the offensive coordinator.
•   Also on his coaching staff is assistant head coach, wide receiver and recruiting coordinator Rob Messinger who was a graduate assistant at Washburn from 2008-11.
•   Former Ichabod All-American quarterback Dane Simoneau is the RiverHawks' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Simoneau is the Ichabods' all-time leader in total offense, passing touchdowns, passing yards and 33 other school single-season, single-game and career records finishing in 2011. He spent one season as a graduate assistant at Washburn.
•   The RiverHawks are 11th in the MIAA in scoring at 9.4 points per game while allowing 51.2 per game.
•   Offensively, the RiverHawks are averaging 211.6 yards per game while allowing 519.6 yards per game.
•   Craig Davis leads the team with 25.2 yards per game rushing average.
•   Cade Yeager is 41 of 91 passing with two touchdowns and 122 yards per game throwing three interceptions.
•   Ryheem Brummitt is averaging 13.2 yards per catch with a team-high 21 receptions and two scores.
•   Courtland Clark has 37 tackles to lead NSU and J'Quille Washington has 36 tackles with 6.5 for loss for 23 yards.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods
(Sept. 29, 2018) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods were blanked in the first half by Missouri Western and could not recover as they fell 38-7 to the Griffons dropped to 2-3 on the season.
The Griffons (3-2, 3-2 MIAA) led 21-0 at the break after recording 285 yards of offense on 34 plays and would go up 24-0 after scoring on their first drive of the second stanza.
The Ichabods jumped on the board with 8:00 to play in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by James Brania-Hopp but it would not be enough as the Ichabods were shutout in the fourth quarter as the Griffons picked up the win snapping a three-game winning streak by the Ichabods in series.
Brania-Hopp, the MIAA-leader in receiving, led the Ichabods with seven catches for 139 yards. Mitch Schurig was 18 of 33 passing for 223 and Kamani Addison led the Ichabods with 11 rushes for 45 yards.
Defensively, Austin Tillman led the Ichabods with 14 tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss and Derrick McGreevy had 10 tackles to pace Washburn.
Overall, the Griffons outgained the Ichabods 544 to 332 running 69 plays to 66 for Washburn. On the ground, the Griffons had a 295 to 109 advantage holding the ball for 34:45 compared to 25:15 for Washburn. Washburn was 4 of 13 on third down conversions compared to 12 of 15 for the Griffons.
 
A win over Northeastern State would ...

• Washburn is 551-582-44 (.484) in the 128th year of Ichabod football.

Going into the Washburn Athletic Hall of Fame
TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Athletic Department is proud to announce the 2018 Hall of Fame class which will be enshrined on Oct. 6 in a morning breakfast ceremony in the Washburn Room inside the Memorial Union on the Washburn campus. The induction class of Jill (Fischer) Miller, Tessa (Jones) Arndorfer, Fletcher Terrell and Cary Williams will join the 142 former student-athletes, coaches and administrators who have been honored for their contributions to Washburn athletics. The quartet will also be recognized at halftime of the football game against Northeastern State.
 
Jill (Fischer) Miller – Softball, 1984-1988
Fischer was a four year starter at third base for the Lady Blues softball team earning first team all-district honors and first team all-conference accolades as a junior and senior helping the Ichabods to a second-place finish in the NAIA National Tournament in 1985 and a sixth-place finish in 1986 and a fifth-place in 1988 as a senior. As a senior, she led the team in batting with a .345 average collecting a team-high 51 hits striking out only three times in 148 at bats. Her .460 slugging percentage was also best on the team. Miller and her husband live in Ozawkie and have three children Jordan, Jared and Justin. Her favorite memory of playing at Washburn was playing for the national championship in Indiana as well as being part of a 17-inning game which at the time was the longest in NAIA history in a game played in Oklahoma City at the Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
 
Tessa (Jones) Arndorfer – Volleyball, 2005-07
Jones was the first player in program history to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American honors three times during her Lady Blues career. She was a third team AVCA member after the 2005 season. She then earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2006 and was named a first team All-American in 2007 by the AVCA and a second team All-American selection by CoSIDA. She finished her career fifth on the all-time kills chart at Washburn with 1,511. Jones still holds the single-season kills record of 657 set in 2007. She is one of four Lady Blues players to receive an AVCA National Player of the Week award. Jones earned two first-team all-MIAA awards and a second-team honor and was the MIAA's MVP as a senior in 2007 helping lead the Ichabods to an NCAA Final Four appearance in Lee Arena. Her favorite Washburn memory is defeating a No. 1-ranked Tampa in the quarterfinals in five sets. She lives in Overland Park with her husband Tim Arndorfer.
 
Fletcher Terrell – Football, 2003-06
Terrell was an overall five-time All-American selection following his junior and senior seasons as well as a two-time all-region pick and a three-time all-MIAA pick earning honorable mention honors in 2003 followed by second team honors in 2004 and first team honors at both return specialist and defensive back. His 22 interceptions are the most in Ichabod history as well as his 446 career interception return yards. His eight interceptions in 2005 is also a school record. When his career ended, his 70 passes defended was an NCAA record. As a kickoff returner, Terrell's 27.32 yards per return is second on the all-time chart and is tied with Cary Williams for the longest return in school history at 100 yards, one of two he returned for a touchdown which is also a school record. Terrell finished with 206 tackles including 136 solo stops. He was part of the 2005 MIAA Championship Ichabod team. His favorite Washburn memory is the camaraderie with the rest of his teammates. Terrell lives in Topeka with his wife Abby and children Fletcher (IV) and Aliviyah.
 
Cary Williams – Football, 2006-07
Cary was a two-year member of the Ichabods on the field joining the squad in 2005. In two seasons, Williams recorded 11 interceptions which is fourth on the all-time chart at Washburn and his seven interceptions in 2007 is second on the single-season list. Williams earned All-American honors from five different organizations as a senior including one being honored as one of eight Ichabods all-time to receive Associated Press Little All-America honors. He was also a CoSIDA and American Football Coaches Association first-team selection and a second-team pick by D2football.com and the Football Gazette. He was a two-time all-region selection and a first team all-MIAA pick as a senior at both kick returner and defensive back. Against Missouri Southern on Oct. 6, 2007, Williams became the only Ichabod to return a kickoff for a touchdown (100 yards), a touchdown reception (68 yards) and record an interception in a single game. His 25.52 yards per kickoff return is third all-time on the Ichabod career chart and his two kickoff returns for touchdowns are tied with Fletcher Terrell for the most all-time. Williams had 94 career tackles with 67 solo stops. Williams would go on to become the fifth Ichabod taken in the NFL draft going in the seventh round to the Tennessee Titans in 2008. He would play nine seasons in the NFL winning a Super Bowl title (Super Bowl 47) in 2013 with the Baltimore Ravens. He recorded 352 tackles with nine interceptions scoring two scores. Williams lives outside of Nashville, Tenn., with his wife Amanda and two daughters Amari and Charlotte. He mentions the Missouri Southern game as his top sporting memory at Washburn.
 
Ichabods in the national polls
WACO, Texas -- For the 12th time in the last 15 years, the Washburn Ichabod football team received votes in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches presason poll released to start the 2018 season. The Ichabods, under head coach Craig Schurig, have been ranked or have received votes in the AFCA poll 66 times and have been ranked in the top 10 a total of 15 times.
 
On the horizon
Washburn returns to Yager Stadium to wrap up its mini two-game homestand with Missouri Southern on Oct. 13 for Washburn's Homecoming. The Ichabods will travel to Edmond, Oklahoma on Oct. 20 before facing Emporia State on Oct. 27 in Topeka.
