Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Washburn Soccer falls to Emporia State

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn Soccer was held scoreless by Emporia State in the final home game of the season. The Hornets scored one goal in each period to defeat the Ichabods 2-0. Washburn is now 7-8-2 overall and 3-5-2 in the MIAA.

Emporia State improved to 12-4-1 on the season and 7-3 in conference play.

The Hornets got on the board in the 34th minute after Kennedy Hoffman scored from five yards out with an assist from Sydney Martens and Makayla Brady.

Through the first 45 minutes, ESU narrowly led in shots 6-4. Josie Rimmer took the lone shot on goal for the Ichabods while Emporia had two.

Defender Whitney Bockover made an incredible play in the 60th minute that saved a goal. Hoffman was driving towards the net with the ball and Bailee Russell went out to contest the shot. Hoffman got a shot off, but Bockover was there in front of the net to kick the ball away and keep the game within one.

The score did not stay that way for much longer as Emporia State extended its lead to 2-0 with a penalty kick in the 66th minute. Rachel Marshall scored the goal on her second attempt after it was ruled that an Ichabod encroached in on the box during the first attempt.

With just two minutes remaining in the match, Rimmer recorded another shot on goal attempt, but it was also held on to by the keeper.

At the end of the match, Emporia State outshot Washburn 13-7 and also led in SOG, 5-2.

For the Ichabods, Rimmer took two shots, both on goal. Olivia Grasso also attempted two shots. In net, Russell held on for three saves.

The Ichabods travel to Hays, Kan. for the regular season finale on Sunday, Oct. 28. The match between Washburn and Fort Hays is set for 1 p.m. The Tigers are 9-6-2 overall and 7-3 in conference play after defeating Nebraska-Kearney in overtime earlier Friday afternoon.
