Ichabods renew rivalry with Hornets in 115th meeting on Saturday

For starters
• The Washburn Ichabods return to Yager Stadium where they have won their last three games to face Emporia State on Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff time.
• The Ichabods  (4-4, 4-4 MIAA) were shutout last time out in a 34-0 loss at Central Oklahoma.
• The Hornets have a matching 4-4 record after falling to Missouri Western on the ESU Homecoming last weekend.
• The Ichabods and the Hornets are in a three-way tie for sixth-place in the MIAA standings with Nebraska-Kearney.
• After putting up a season-high 570 yards of total offense in the win over Missouri Southern on Oct. 13 at home, the Ichabods were limited to a season-low 231 last time out against Central Oklahoma.
• Washburn also had a season-low 131 yards passing.
• The shutout by UCO was the first time an Ichabod team had been blanked in 49 games. The last time an Ichabod team was held scoreless was a 44-0 loss at Central Missouri on Oct. 11, 2014.
 
Washburn/Emporia State Series notes
• ESU leads the all-time series 56-52-6.
• After Washburn won eight in a row in the series from 2004 to 2011, the Hornets have won the last three and five of the last six.
• The Washburn/Emporia State series is the second-most played series in NCAA Division II history as South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State have reclassified to NCAA Division II. Those two schools have met 132 times dating back to 1895.

Noting the Ichabods
• Hunter Browning leads the team with 43.4 yards per game with career highs of 17 carries and 116 yards against Northeastern State … the Ichabods are averaging 153.8 yards per game … as a team the Ichabods are allowing 140.4 per contest.
• Blake Peterson is averaging 202.7 yards per game passing in three starts with three touchdowns completing 48.9 percent of his passes … Mitch Schurig is 83 of 135 passing with eight touchdowns averaging 191.0 yards per game … overall the Ichabods are averaging 240.2 yards per game passing.
• James Brania-Hopp has 46 catches for 775 yards with four scores while averaging 96.9 yards per game receiving … he is also averaging 16.8 yards per catch … Brania-Hopp leads the MIAA in receiving yards per game, receptions per game (5.8) and total yards.
• Derrick McGreevy is fifth in the league with 9.3 tackles per game tallying 74 overall … Austin Tillman is seventh in the MIAA and second on the Ichabods with 8.9 tackles per game and 71 overall … Tillman leads the team lead with 7.0 tackles for loss for 26 yards.
• Through eight games, the Ichabods have a run-based offensive attack with 334 run plays and 263 pass plays … on third down and long (anything over seven yards) the Ichabods have ran the ball 13 times and passed it 63 times this season.
• The Ichabods are fourth in the MIAA in first downs with 21.9 per game after a school-record 36 against Missouri Southern last time at home.
• The Ichabods are ranked third in the MIAA in third down conversions moving the chains on 51 of 125 attempts and defensively the Ichabods are seventh in the MIAA in opponent third down conversions limiting foes to 39 of 109 attempts for a 36 percent average.
• Washburn is ranked seventh in the MIAA in penalties averaging 6.4 per game for 59.6 yards per game while opponents are averaging 5.4 penalties per game and 45.1 yards per contest which is 12th in the MIAA.
• Washburn is sixth in the MIAA in time of possession averaging 30:27 per game.
• Derrick McGreevy's 280 tackles is 10th on the all-time chart at Washburn.
• Austin Tillman's 264 career tackles sit 11th on the all-time chart at Washburn.

Noting the Hornets
• The Hornets are 4-4 this season coming off a 42-28 Homecoming loss to Missouri Western last time out.
• ESU was up 28-20 entering the fourth quarter until the Griffons scored 22 unanswered points rallying for the win.
• The Hornets are led by Braxton Marstall at quarterback who is averaging 217.4 yards passing per game and 34.5 per game on the ground … he has accounted for 20 touchdowns overall with 14 through the air.
• Landon Nault is averaging 83.2 yards per game rushing to lead the Hornets.
• Justin Brown has a team-high 49 catches for 486 yards with three scores and Tyler Harris has 41 catches for a team-high 520 yards and eight touchdowns averaging 12.7 yards per catch.
• Jace McDown has 83 tackles with 50 solo stops to lead ESU adding 10 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks with three forced fumbles.
• The Hornets have yet to hit a field goal this season going 0-3 with two different placekickers.
 
Last time out for the Ichabods
(Oct. 20, 2018) Edmond, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabod football team was shutout for the first time in 49 games as they fell 34-0 at Central Oklahoma on Saturday.
UCO (5-3, 5-3 MIAA) took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. After the Ichabods (4-4, 4-4 MIAA) started the ensuing drive on their own 5, Washburn pushed the ball out to the 35 before having to punt for the first of five tines on the day.
The Bronchos then scored on their next drive going 71 yards in 12 plays wrapping up the drive with a 25-yard field goal with 2:40 to go in the first quarter.
Washburn then fumbled on its next drive on the second play from scrimmage returning the ball back to UCO who added another field goal on the first play of the second quarter.
Washburn's best drive of the first half went down to the UCO 22 after starting at its own one yard line, but did not convert a fourth-down and one turning the ball over on downs and the Ichabods entered the half down 13-0.
The Ichabods took the second half kickoff, but went three and out and UCO needed six plays to go up 20-0 with 10:19 to play in the third quarter. Another Washburn punt led to UCO's second touchdown of the third quarter to go up 27-0 and with 11:13 to play in the game scored going up 34-0 wrapping up the scoring.
Washburn was outgained 411 to 231 in the game and was limited to 100 yards on the ground and a season-low 131 yards passing.
Curtis Whitten had 29 yards on seven carries on the ground and Mitch Schurig was 11 of 21 for 100 yards. James Brania-Hopp had four catches for 46 yards.
Derrick McGreevy had eight tackles to lead the Ichabods and Dwane Simmons had six. Landen Urban had five tackles with a sack.
The Ichabods were shutout for the first time since Oct. 11, 2014 in a 44-0 loss at Central Missouri.

A win over Emporia State would ...
• lift the Ichabods to 554-583-44 in their football history.
• snap a three-game winning streak by the Hornets in the series.
• improve the Ichabods to 5-4 on the season.

Ichabods in the national polls
WACO, Texas -- For the 12th time in the last 15 years, the Washburn Ichabod football team received votes in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches presason poll released to start the 2018 season. The Ichabods, under head coach Craig Schurig, have been ranked or have received votes in the AFCA poll 66 times and have been ranked in the top 10 a total of 15 times.
 
On the horizon
Washburn will take its final regular season road trip of the season when the Ichabods will travel to Pittsburg State to face the Gorillas looking for their third-straight win in the Jungle and the fifth in the last six meetings in Pittsburg.
