HAYS, Kan. -- A late goal scored by Fort Hays State gave the Tigers a 1-0 victory over Washburn soccer in the final regular season match Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Ichabods (7-9-2, 3-6-2 MIAA) will play in the MIAA Tournament next week as the No. 8 seed against No. 1 Central Oklahoma.
The Tigers (10-6-2, 8-3 MIAA) had already secured their place in the conference tournament and will play as the No. 4 seed.
Both offenses were quiet in the first half as Fort Hays narrowly outshot Washburn 3-2. Both of the shot attempts by Washburn were on goal, taken by
Josie Rimmer and
Paige Swanson.
Just 25 seconds into the second half, Rimmer took another shot on goal, but it was held on by the Tigers. Over the next 38 minutes, both teams exchanged shot attempts, but did not convert those into a goal.
With under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Tigers broke the no score tie with a header goal by Olympia Katsouridis in the 83rd minute. FHSU held WU without another shot to finalize the win.
At the end of the match, Fort Hays took eight shot attempts to Washburn's six. Fort Hays also led in shots on goal, 4-3.
For the Ichabods, Rimmer led the team with two shots with both being on target. Swanson also added a shot on goal.
Kelsi Smith,
Emily Gartner, and Makenzie Menke all recorded a shot attempt. In net,
Bailee Russell made three saves.
Washburn advances as one of the eight teams in the MIAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Ichabods finished the season in a tie for eighth place with Missouri Southern, but Washburn won the tie breaker because of their 3-0 victory over MSSU earlier this season. In the first round of the tournament, Washburn will face the No. 1 seed and fifth-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos in Edmond, Okla. on Wednesday, October 31. The match is set for 7 p.m.
