TOPEKA, Kan. -- Washburn soccer scored two first half goals, but Southwest Baptist answered with two goals of its own in the second half and pushed the game to the full 110 minutes as it ended in a 2-2 tie. The Ichabods are now 5-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the MIAA.
The first shot attempted by the Ichabods resulted in a goal to put the home team up 1-0 in the 10th minute. A foul by Southwest Baptist set up a free kick for
Olivia Grasso on the side of the field 30 yards out. Grasso launched the ball towards the net and
Josie Rimmer jumped in perfect time to get a header goal in the left side of the net.
Just nine minutes later, Rimmer was in the mix yet again as she made a cut towards the goal and received a strong pass from the midfield. As the Bearcats' keeper went out to contest the shot, Rimmer passed the ball across to Grasso who tapped it across the line right in front of the net to increase the Washburn lead to 2-0.
The Ichabods attempted several opportunities to extend their lead, but the team was unable to capitalize. Southwest Baptist erased the shutout in the 74th minute when Raquel Rodriguez kicked a long and high shot from 30 yards out and it went above keeper
Whitney Bockover's hands.
With just 53 seconds left in regulation, the Bearcats' Laura Manuel got the ball and found the back of the net from 10 yards out and tied the game 2-2. Washburn was held without a shot attempt in the final 21 minutes of regulation and the game went to overtime.
Both teams took three shots in overtime, with each goalie making one save, but neither team scored. Two minutes into the second overtime, Rimmer took a shot, but SBU's goalie made the save. Bockover made a save of her own in the 106th minute, but that would be the last shot by either team as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
SBU outshot WU 18-13 and also led in shots on goal 10-6. For the Ichabods, Rimmer finished the night with her third goal of the season and an assist. She led the team in shot attempts with seven, four of which were on goal. Grasso netted her fifth goal of the season and extended her scoring streak to three consecutive games. She also recorded her first assist.
Mackenzie Heiman took two shots and one on target. In the net, Bockover grabbed eight saves.
Washburn continues its home stand on Sunday, Oct. 7, as the Ichabods host the Missouri Southern Lions. The game is slated for 2 p.m.
