Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Team effort gives Ichabods a 3-0 victory over Lions

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The poor weather conditions on Sunday afternoon didn't stop Washburn soccer from completing its fifth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win against Missouri Southern (6-4-2, 2-2-1 MIAA). The Ichabods improve to 6-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

Josie Rimmer gave the Ichabods an early 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the game. Tera Lynch took a shot on goal, but it was momentarily saved by Lions' keeper, Luz Galindo. However, Galindo could not hold on and Rimmer was there to kick the ball into the back of the net.

The rest of the first half was relatively quiet for both teams. Washburn's defense held Missouri Southern to just two shot attempts while the Ichabods took five shots.

Missouri Southern had several possessions and shot attempts in the second half that looked like it might cause trouble, but Washburn's defense stood strong. A foul by the Lions in the 79th minute set up a free kick for Mackenzie Heiman from 40 yards out. Heiman launched the ball towards the net where Kelsi Smith waited and tapped it in right in front of the goal to extend Washburn's lead to 2-0.

The final goal of the day was scored in the 85th minute by Olivia Grasso. Heiman passed the ball from midfield up to Grasso who took off running. She kicked the ball from 15 yards out and found the back of the net to put the Ichabods up 3-0.

The Lions claimed the final shot of the match in the closing minute of regulation, but Whitney Bockover held on for the save which sealed the victory.

Washburn outshot Missouri Southern 12-7. The Ichabods also led in SOG, 8-4. Five different players had at least one shot on goal.

Scoring in her second consecutive game, Rimmer finished with one goal and three shot attempts with two being on target. She now has four goals on the season. Smith recorded her first goal of the season and took two shots, both on goal. Extending her scoring streak to four games, Grasso netted her sixth goal of the season. Heiman recorded two assists and also had two shots. Lynch also had an assist and a shot on goal. Bockover made four saves and improved her record to 4-2-1.

Washburn will travel to Oklahoma next weekend to take on Northeastern State on Friday, Oct. 12.
