NOTES | Women's basketball returns to KC to face Rockhurst

THE TIP-OFF
After an 0-2 opening weekend, Washburn women's hoops will try to bounce back when it travels to Rockhurst on Friday. The Ichabods and Hawks are slated for a 5:30 pm tip-off from Mason-Halpin Field House.

SCOUTING ROCKHURST
• The 2018 edition of the Rockhurst Hawks began the week 2-0 with a 82-79 double overtime thriller over Adams State in the season opener before manhandling Saint Mary (Kan.), 92-56.
• The Hawks thus far are shooting .452 (57-126) from the field with an efficient .304 (46-62) from three-point distance. 
• On the glass, RU is losing the battle with opponents outrebounding the Hawks, 72-65. Rockhurst's 31.0 boards per game is 6.5 less than what opponents are averaging through the first two games.
• The offense is led by Madeline Ronshausen who averaged 15.6 points last season. Ronshausen netted 23 points in the OT win and currently leads the team with 18.5 points/game

THEY GOT HISTORY
Friday's showdown with Rockhurst will be the 19th all-time meeting. Washburn leads the series 15-3 which includes a 64-62 win last season at Lee Arena.  The Ichabods enter this weekend's contest carrying an eight-game win streak over the Hawks.

LAST TIME OUT
Washburn opened the season with a pair of losses to NSIC members, Augustana (75-67) and Concordia-St. Paul (61-59) at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. In the opener with the Vikings, Washburn fell behind early and unable to recover despite outscoring AU in the second half, 41-38. Leading by two heading into the fourth, Washburn stretched its lead to as much as six midway through before the Golden Bears rallied late with a 9-0 run. A last second three-pointer by the Ichabods fell as time expired, trimming the final margin to two.

ON THE GLASS
• Through two games, the Ichabods have out rebounded their opponents by a combined 94-85. 
• Washburn is averaging 47 rebounds a game, second in the MIAA leaderboard and 46th nationally.
• Among the MIAA, the Ichabods are third in defensive boards per game (31) and third on the offensive glass with 17 per game.

50TH SEASON 
???????
The 2018-19 academic year marks the 50th season of women's athletics at Washburn University, which began with volleyball, basketball, softball, field hockey and  gymnastics. Although, field hockey and gymnastics are no longer available, the offerings for female student-athletes have grown to eight sports with the addition of soccer, tennis, and most cross country and track and field.
