TOPEKA, Kan. --- Unable to catch a break, the Washburn Ichabod baseball fell to Truman State, 2-0, in Sunday's series finale. As a result, the four-game series was split as the Ichabods closed non-conference play for the time being at 5-5.
Â
The Washburn offense sputtered throughout the day leaving six runners stranded and was held hitless until the third.
Â
Stout pitching was the highlight for Ichabods as
Sam Carver made his Falley Field debut. Carver came out strong in his start, striking out three of the first seven batters faced, while allowing just one hit. The junior left-hander kept the Bulldogs (2-2) scoreless through the five innings.
Â
Truman broke the deadlock in the sixth after applying pressure with a pair of singles to lead off the inning. The Bulldogs notched their first run late in the inning before a fielding error accounted for the second run. Carver however did well though to stem rally by picking off a runner at second to end the inning.
Â
Now behind, the Ichabod batters continued to struggle to get runner on base as they combined for five hits and four base runners during the final three and a half innings and were ultimately left empty handed.
Â
Carver was dealt the loss after working six innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and finished with seven strikeouts.
Austin Simpson,
Nathan Lorenzen, and
Jake Butterfield then followed in relief allowing a combined three hits and held Truman scoreless for the final three innings.
Â
Jake Hahn led all Ichabod batters as he accounted for three of the team's seven hits on the day.
Josh Crosby followed as he went 2 for 4 with
Darian Abram and
Bailey Jenkins filling out the balance.
Â
Washburn will return to Falley Field on Friday, Feb. 23 when it hosts begins MIAA action with nationally-ranked Central Oklahoma.
