TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team had its first game in Topeka during the 2018 season, albeit on Patty Dick Field at Hummer Sports Park, the Ichabods came off unscathed sweeping a doubleheader from Newman on Tuesday afternoon. Washburn is schedule for two doubleheaders starting with Rockhurst on Friday and its MIAA opener against Central Oklahoma, scheduled for the Washburn Softball Complex on campus. Game 1 - Washburn 4, Newman 1
The took advantage of a Jet error in the bottom of the first wen
Taylor Kirk's single scored
Savannah Moore who walked in the inning staking the Ichabods to a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Washburn added two more after a lead off walk by
Halle England, she scored on a triple by
Maddie Anderson and then
Ashley Ruder scored on an RBI single by Moore.
The Jets scored a solo run in the fourth to cut the Ichabod lead to 3-1, but Washburn added a run in the sixth when Moore's single scored
Emilee Baker who doubled in the inning.
Megan Deiter picked up the win pitching 4 1/3 innings allowing one run without giving up a hit striking out four improving to 5-0.
Lexi Crabtree pitched the remaining of the game with two strikeouts picking up her second save of the season.
Baker, Moore and Carney each had two hits in the game.
Game 2 - Washburn 6, Newman 2
For the second game in a row, Washburn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Taylor Kirk's single scored
Savannah Moore.
The Jets scored two in the top of the second and held the lead until the Ichabods scored two in the bottom of the third with two outs starting when Moore was hit by a pitch.
Alyssa Carney tripled to score Moore and then Carney scored on a single to center by
Samantha Stallbaumer.
The Ichabods broke the game open scoring three unearned runs in the fourth after hits by
Lexie Myers and
Halle England.
Kelsee Henry went the distance improving to 5-2 with four strikeouts scattering three hits.
Carney had four hits in the twin bill to lead the Ichabods and Moore and Stallbaumer each had two.
