Baseball falls as bats go cold in series finale

TOPEKA, Kan. --- The offense struggled for Washburn baseball on Saturday as it was outhit, 13-7, in a 8-3 loss to Northwest Missouri State in the series finale. 

Three of the Ichabods' seven hits came during the fifth while they tallied two in the eighth with one in  the second and fourth innings. 

Trailing 6-0 in the fifth, Kolton Meyer led off the frame with a double to deep center. He stay on the base path though was shortlived a Jake Hahn followed suit with a double of his own to put Washburn (8-19, 2-14 MIAA) on the board as Meyer scored. Two outs later, Javis Larson plated Hahn with his first career triple, trimming the Bearcat advantage to 6-2.

Larson finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish, while Meyer and Hahn were each 1-for-4 hitting.

In the eighth, Darian Abram kicked off the inning with a solo shot to center for his second home run of the season and fifth of his career, though Washburn continued to trail, 7-3. Larson would then find his way to third after reaching on a single to left center, but the Ichabods were unable to bring him home. Washburn finished the day with five runners left on base.

Northwest Missouri (15-12, 11-5 MIAA) took an 1-0 lead in the first, before plating four runs on four hits in the third. NWMSU then scored once more in the fourth, sixth and ninth.

Josh Crosby's 2-for-4 day marked the senior's ninth multi-hit game. Steven Jacobson meanwhile stretched his reached base streak to 10 games, despite an 0-for-3 day in the batter's box with a hit by pitch.

Ichabod Starter Sam Carver was dealt the loss as he tossed four innings, with six runs, five earned, on nine hits. Carver walked one and registered two strikeouts. Trevor Marreel was effective in his five innings of relief, conceding two runs on four hits with five strikeouts, while leaving NWMSU hitless during the fifth, seventh and eighth.

The Ichabods begin a four-game road trip to close out the month of March on Tuesday as they head to Emporia State before heading to Pittsburg State for a three-game series. The single-game with the Hornets is scheduled for 6 pm.
