Baseball sweeps doubleheader to win series

BOLIVAR, Mo. --- Washburn baseball claimed another MIAA series on Saturday as it swept Southwest Baptist in a doubleheader at Dodson Field in Bolivar, Mo. The Ichabods (15-28, 9-23 MIAA) routed the Bearcats in game one 16-1 before securing the series with an 8-6 victory. 

Game 1
The Ichabods scored 16 runs on 14 hits during the opener of their doubleheader with nine different hitters tallying at least one hit. Steve Jacobson (3-for-4) led the offense by accounting for seven Washburn runs as he crossed home three times while notching a career-best four RBI.

Jake Hahn (3-for-5) followed in production with two runs scored and three RBI. Joel Spain (2-for-3) and Javis Larson (1-for-3) also added to the cause as each notched two RBI. 

Bowe Behymer's three runs scored all came off the bat of Jacobson as the duo combined in the second (1-0), third (4-0) and fifth (14-1). 

The onslaught began with a three-run second inning before surging in the third to blow open the game with a six-run third. Leading 9-0 to start the fourth, the Washburn offense continued to churn as back-to-back doubles from Hahn and Spain stretched the margin to 12-0.

Reid Greaser accounted for the final two runs during the seventh as a RBI single scored Grady Middendorf to make it 15-1, before eventually scoring on a wild pitch. 

A Washburn throwing error in the fourth resulted in Southwest Baptist's lone run allowing it eluded the shutout.

On the mound, starter Nick Sloan left the Bearcats in his wake holding them to four hits. As a result Sloan was accredited with the win as tossed five strikeouts during his seven innings of work.

Game 2
In the nightcap, Jake Bublitz (1-for-3) opened the scoring in the first inning with a three-run blast for his sixth home run of the season. 

Washburn bats continued to manufacture runs during the second as Brady Hoover (1-for-5) and Behymer (2-for-3) each notched unearned runs, while Crosby (3-for-4) connected with his 13th homer of the season.

In the third, Crosby tallied his second RBI with a double to left scored Kolton Meyer (0-for-2) from second following a lead-off walk. The final Ichabod run of the day came in the fifth as Spain scored on a Larson single to right. 

SBU scored twice in the first and once in the second, third, sixth and eighth innings. 

The victory was credited to Ichabod starter Austin Simpson, who surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Sam Carver was awarded his first career save as he held SBU scoreless during the final inning and a third with four strikeouts and zero hits. 

Washburn will close out close out its road schedule on Wednesday as it travels to Emporia for the series finale. First-pitch is slated for 6 pm.
