TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn men's tennis team finished its conference season on a high note Thursday, defeating Emporia State 7-2.
The Ichabods' doubles teams shined against the Hornets, as they took all three decisions on that side. The No. 3 ranked team nationally,
Alejandro Valarezo and
Blake Hunter, won their 26th match of the season. The No. 2 slotted team of
Tommy Hunter and
Raul-Alin Dicu won their second straight match, and the No. 3 team of
Chase Brill and
Paul Haase also continued their impressive season, winning 8-3.
In singles action, the Ichabods won four of the six matches, including Valarezo's record-breaking 25th victory of the season. That sets a school mark for singles wins in a single season. The Hornets did not go away without a fight, as three matches went into a third set, while
Paul Haase's No. 2 singles match had tiebreakers in both sets.
With the win, the Ichabods move to 9-4, 3-2 in the MIAA. The Ichabods will go on to face Rockhurst and William Woods in the week prior to the MIAA tournament, where the Ichabods made the finals last season. The match against the Hawks will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Topeka.
