KEARNEY, Neb. -- Washburn Soccer got back to its winning ways Friday night as a goal from
Paige Swanson was all the team needed to defeat Nebraska-Kearney 1-0. With the victory, Washburn is now 3-2 on the season.
The Lopers (2-3) attempted the first two shots of the game in the first seven minutes, but Washburn senior Swanson made the most of her shot. At the 10 minute mark, Swanson got the ball and netted her first goal of the season to quickly put the Ichabods up 1-0.
Tera Lynch and
Mattie Miano received an assist on the play.
At the half, the Ichabods still held a 1-0 lead. WU had a close 4-3 advantage in shots taken and held UNK to just one shot on goal.
The second half saw several fouls committed by both teams, as the Lopers had eight and the Ichabods committed five. Washburn's defense held Nebraska-Kearney to three shots in the second period, two of which were in the final two and a half minutes of the game. Goalie
Bailee Russell made a save in the final 65 seconds to secure the victory.
Washburn outshot Nebraska-Kearney 8-6 and also led in shots on goal 4-3. UNK had nine corner kicks to WU's two.
Swanson finished the night with one goal on two shots taken. Lynch recorded an assist and one shot on goal. Freshman Miano dished out her first collegiate career assist. Goal keeper Russell pulled down two saves.
The Ichabods continue on the road to face Emporia State this Sunday, Sept. 16. The matinee meeting with the Hornets is scheduled for 2 p.m.
