EMPORIA, Kan. -- For the first time this season, Washburn Soccer was held scoreless as Emporia State shutout the Ichabods 3-0 Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Washburn is now 3-3 on the season.
Washburn took two shots in the first 30 seconds of the game, but its offense stalled as the team didn't get another shot off until the 35th minute. A foul committed by the Ichabods allowed Emporia State to take a free kick from 20 yards out, which Maria Walden used to find the back of the net and put the Hornets up 1-0 in the 13th minute.
ESU increased its lead in the 29th minute when Makayla Brady got a shot off from the left side of the field for the second goal of the game.
Tera Lynch took the lone Ichabod first half shot on goal in the 35th minute, but it was pulled down by the Hornets keeper.
After the first 45 minutes, ESU had outshot WU 11-3. Both teams played very physical as Washburn committed 10 fouls and Emporia State had eight.
The Hornets continued to dominate the offensive possession time in the second half. Aislinn Hughes scored the final goal of the day for Emporia in the 54th minute with a shot from the right side at 20 yards out. Washburn was held to just two second half shots.
At the end of the game, ESU outshot WU 18-5 and also led in shots on goal 6-1. Emporia had six corner kicks to Washburn's two. Both teams finished with double digit number of fouls, with ESU committing 17 and WU with 15.
Josie Rimmer led the team with two shots taken.

Washburn will return to Topeka to host a pair of home games next week. The Ichabods will take on Fort Hays on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. and then face Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 2 p.m.
