Men's Tennis claims a singles and doubles title at MSU Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Washburn Men's tennis team boasted champions in both singles and doubles competition at the conclusion of the Midwestern State University Invitational on Saturday.
 
The duo of Alejandro Valarezo and Paul Haase took the Doubles Flight A championship title with victories over Southwest Baptist (8-3), Seward County Community College (9-8(1) ), Northwest Missouri (default), and finally Tyler Junior College (8-4). 

Chase Brill had to work hard to earn the champion title in Flight D singles. After handling opponents from Southern Arkansas (6-4, 6-2) and Tyler Junior College (6-4, 6-3), Brill defeated Ben Westwick of Midwestern State 4-6, 7-6, 11-9 and finally Alex Mesquida Berg of SCCC in a thrilling three set championship game 6-7(5), 6-0, 11-9. 

In Flight B doubles action, the tandem of Bradley Eidenmueller and Raul-Alin Dicu reahced the semifinal match, but fell 8-4 to MSU.

In singles play, Valarezo and Dicu each won their opening round in Flight A, but struggled in the next two matches and only reached round three on the consolation side of the bracket.

Haase recorded victories in Flight B over TJC (6-7, 6-4, 10-8) and SBU (6-2, 7-5) before losing a close semifinal match to Cameron University 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.

In Flight C, Eidenmueller and Marc Roura Casi faced each other in round three of the consolation bracket, where Casi advanced to the fourth round on default. Facing NWMSU, Casi dropped a tough three set match 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
 
Washburn Tennis will travel next to Oklahoma City, Okla., to compete in the ITA Central Regional. The tournament begins Friday, Sept. 28 and goes through Sunday, Sept. 30.
