ST. LOUIS, Mo. --- A week after entering the America Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top 25, Washburn volleyball climbed into the top 15 as it jumped eight spots to number 13.
The Ichabods collected 601 points to earn their upgrade following an historic week as they defeated Emporia State, Lindenwood and previous No. 13 Central Missouri en route to stretching their consecutive win streak and record to 17-0. Washburn, which is also 5-0 in the MIAA, set a program record on Friday as it earned its 16-consecutive win at Lindenwood for the best start in program-history. Less than 24 hours, the Ichabods rewrote the record as they ousted then-No.13 Central Missouri on the road in four sets.
With the release of the latest poll, Washburn pushes its all-time mentions among the AVCA rankings to 202. Prior to slipping out of the rankings last season, Washburn has a streak of 178 consecutive weeks among the Top 25, dating back to the final poll in 2003. This is 117th time since head coach
Chris Herron took over the program in 2002, that the Ichabods have found themselves listed at No. 15 or higher.
The MIAA continued to be represented by four member institutions. In addition to Washburn was Nebraska-Kearney, Central Missouri and Central Oklahoma. UNK led the pack as it managed to climb one spot to No. 4 and garnered a first-place vote and 1019 points. UCM amassed 425 points as it slipped four spots to No. 17, while UCO took two steps back to No. 18 and trail the Jennies by 41 points. Northwest Missouri was named among the receiving votes category.
Washburn returns to action this weekend with trips to Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State.
