OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- For the second consecutive year, Washburn Men's Tennis claimed the doubles title at the ITA Central Regional Championships as the duo of
Alejandro Valarezo Plaza and
Paul Haase took home the victory.
In the doubles semifinal match, Valarezo Plaza and Haase defeated Southwest Baptist 6-3, 6-4. The final match against No. 1 seeded Southeastern Oklahoma was a hard fought battle by both teams. Washburn lost the first set 2-6, but came back to take the second set 6-3. The third set went to a tiebreaker and the Ichabods came out on top 11-9.
Valarezo Plaza was a member of the Washburn duo who won the championship last year with
Blake Hunter.
In singles action, Valarezo Plaza reached the semifinal and final round for the second consecutive year. He started the day with a straight set victory over Raul Caballero of Southwest Baptist, 6-3, 6-2.
He then took on Franco Oliva of Northwest Missouri in the championship round. The two dueled it out as Oliva took the first set 6-4 and Valarezo Plaza won set two 7-5. It all came down to the third set. Valarezo Plaza led 5-2 at one time and had five match points, but he was unable to hold on as Oliva came back to take the match 7-6.
In the consolation back draw, teammates
Bradley Eidenmueller and
Chase Brill faced each other in the semifinal round. Eidenmueller won the match, but fell in the consolation final.
Both Washburn men and women enjoyed success in this weekend's tournament. In addition to winning both the men's and women's doubles championships, the Ichabods boasted a combined six singles players and three doubles teams who returned to play on the final day in both the main and back draws. Those numbers exceeded that of any other school competing on the final day and was also the most in Washburn's program history.
