Second half costly for Ichabods

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Washburn Soccer took a 2-0 lead into halftime against Missouri Western, but three unanswered second half goals with a game winning penalty kick in the 84th minute gave the Griffons a 3-2 victory. With the loss, the Ichabods are 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA.
 
Mackenzie Heiman scored the first goal for Washburn in the 14th minute after she took a long shot that found the upper right corner of the net beyond the reach of the Griffons' keeper, Anna Mayer. Just six minutes later, Olivia Grasso extended Washburn's lead to 2-0. Grasso launched a shot from 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the net.

Missouri Western came out firing to start the second half and quickly got themselves back into the game as they scored two goals in a two minute time span. In the 48th minute, Taylor Schwartzkopf got a shot past Whitney Bockover to cut Washburn's lead to 2-1. Two minutes later in the 50th minute, MaKenzie Billings tied the game for the Griffons after she received a pass from Sara Collins.

With the game tied 2-2, Washburn continued to get shots off, but were unable to get them past Mayer. In the 84th minute, the Ichabods committed a foul which set up a penalty kick for the Griffons' Cassidy Menke. She put the ball in the back of the net to put MWSU up 3-2. WU took the final two shots, but couldn't score.

At the end of the day, the Ichabods outshot the Griffons 20-15, but MWSU led 7-5 in shots on goal. Both teams took six corner kicks.

For the Ichabods, Grasso netted her third goal in two games and her fourth of the season. She attempted four shots with two being on target. Heiman took five shots, two on goal, and scored her third goal of the season. Kelsi Smith also had a shot on goal. Keeper Bockover made four saves.
 
Up next, the Ichabods will host Southwest Baptist on Friday, Oct. 5 at Yager Stadium. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
