Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Soccer falls to William Jewell 3-2 in double overtime

LIBERTY, Mo. – It was a hard fought 102 minute battle between Washburn and William Jewell before the Ichabods fell in double overtime by the score of 3-2. With the loss, Washburn is 2-1-0 on the season.

Both teams started the game with a back and forth struggle for possession of the ball. Freshman Josie Rimmer came off the bench at the 23:13 mark and wasted no time to make her presence known. With the help of Kelsi Smith and Tera Lynch, Rimmer kicked in the first goal of the game at 23:37.

The Ichabod offense didn't slow down as the first half came to a close. Washburn took three shots on net in the final minute and 14 seconds, but the Cardinals' keeper, Kaylie Kappelmann, made the saves.

In the first half, Washburn outshot William Jewell 8-5, with six of those shots on net.

Washburn had held opponents scoreless for 229 minutes this season, but William Jewell broke through in the early minutes of the second half. Alyson Galler snuck the ball past Riley Trent to tie the game 1-1 in the 49th minute.

The score was deadlocked at one-all for the following 27 minutes until Rimmer found the back of the net for the second time in the game. Jenna Shortridge got the ball to Rimmer in the 76th minute to put the Ichabods up 2-1.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as just 35 seconds later William Jewell answered with a goal of its own.

At the end or regulation, the score remained at two goals apiece. Washburn outshot William Jewell in the first half 16-11 and led in shots on goal 8-4.

In the first overtime, the Ichabods were limited to just one shot while the Cardinals took three shots. Trent made a great save in the final minute of the game to keep the score 2-2.

William Jewell carried its momentum into the second overtime as the Cardinals quickly scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute.

Rimmer finished the night with two goals on four shots, all four being on goal. Lynch had two shots on goal and an assist. Also recording an assist were Smith and Shortridge. In the net, Trent faced nine shots and made six saves.

The Ichabods will play their first home game against Oklahoma Baptist this Saturday, Sept. 8. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Yager Stadium.
