Washburn Ichabods set for Homecoming game with Bronchos

For starters
> The Washburn Ichabods return to Yager Stadium for the first time in two weeks as they will play host to Central Oklahoma as part of Washburn's Homecoming activities with a 1 p.m. start time.
> The Ichabods (3-4, 3-4 MIAA) have won their last two games coming off a 49-19 win over Missouri Southern in Joplin last time out recording their fifth-straight win against the Lions in the series.
> Central Oklahoma is 2-5 season and have lost its last four games heading to Topeka after a 50-43 loss to Missouri Western last time out. The Bronchos also lost 59-10 to Northwest Missouri, 35-7 to Fort Hays State and  44-26 to Central Missouri during their losing streak.
>  The Ichabods are 0-1 against Central Oklahoma on Washburn's Homecoming falling 38-27 on Oct. 24, 2015 - the University's 150th celebration.
>  The Ichabods are 48-44-1 all-time on Washburn's Homecoming.
>  Washburn is 1-3 in games played in Edmond and in Topeka, Washburn is 2-2 all-time.

This season, a different Ichabod will be wearing No. 17 to honor Dwane Simmons, a senior cornerback who passed away on April 28, 2019. The mass media major was set to graduate this December.

> Schurig's 64.2 completion percentage (106 of 165) is first on the Ichabod single season chart ahead of Dane Simoneau's 60.2 set in 2009 (186 of 309).
> James Letcher, Jr.'s 27.96 career kickoff return average is currently the best in school history.
> Josh Wright's 31 career passes defended (27 breakups, 4 INTs) is third on the Ichabod chart.

 Noting the Bronchos
> The Bronchos are 2-5 having lost their last four games including a 50-43 loss to Missouri Western last time out.
> The two wins for UCO this season came in a 28-23 win over Nebraska-Kearney and a 63-0 win over Lincoln.
> The Bronchos are ranked ninth in the MIAA in total offense at 394.0 yards per game and eighth in total defense allowing 457.6 yards per game.
> UCO is ranked eighth in rush offense (153.9 ypg) and 10th in rush defense (225.4 ypg).
> UCO is 11th in the MIAA in sacks allowed this season with 22 for 117 yards and last in the MIAA in total sacks with two through seven games and last in interceptions with four.
> T.J. Roberts leads the team with 68.2 yards per game on the ground averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
> Keats Calhoon is averaging 143.8 yards per game passing in four appearances and Will Collins is averaging 104.2 yards per game passing.
> Dustin Basks is UCO's leading receiver with 85 yards per game and a team-high five touchdowns averaging 18.8 yards per catch.
> Defensively, O'Shay Harris leads the Bronchos with 53 tackles and Jakarri Hunt has 47 tackles.
 
 Last meeting with Central Oklahoma
(Oct. 20, 2018) Edmond, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabod football team was shutout for the first time in 49 games as they fell 34-0 at Central Oklahoma on Saturday.
UCO (5-3, 5-3 MIAA) took the opening kickoff and marched 75 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. After the Ichabods (4-4, 4-4 MIAA) started the ensuing drive on their own 5, Washburn pushed the ball out to the 35 before having to punt for the first of five tines on the day.
The Bronchos then scored on their next drive going 71 yards in 12 plays wrapping up the drive with a 25-yard field goal with 2:40 to go in the first quarter.
Washburn then fumbled on its next drive on the second play from scrimmage returning the ball back to UCO who added another field goal on the first play of the second quarter.
Washburn's best drive of the first half went down to the UCO 22 after starting at its own one yard line, but did not convert a fourth-down and one turning the ball over on downs and the Ichabods entered the half down 13-0.
The Ichabods took the second half kickoff, but went three and out and UCO needed six plays to go up 20-0 with 10:19 to play in the third quarter. Another Washburn punt led to UCO's second touchdown of the third quarter to go up 27-0 and with 11:13 to play in the game scored going up 34-0 wrapping up the scoring.
Washburn was outgained 411 to 231 in the game and was limited to 100 yards on the ground and a season-low 131 yards passing.
Curtis Whitten had 29 yards on seven carries on the ground and Mitch Schurig was 11 of 21 for 100 yards. James Brania-Hopp had four catches for 46 yards.
Derrick McGreevy had eight tackles to lead the Ichabods and Dwane Simmons had six. Landen Urban had five tackles with a sack.
 
 Last time out for the Ichabods
(Oct. 19, 2019) JOPLIN, Mo. –  JOPLIN, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabod football team won its second game in a row with a 49-19 win over Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon improving to 3-4 on the season.
The Ichabods scored their first points of the game taking advantage of a Lion fumble and Josh Wright returned it 47 for a touchdown putting Washburn out to a 7-0 lead with 8:35 to go in the first quarter. On the Lions' next drive, the Ichabods Chase Williams blocked a Lion punt and returned it 18 yards for a score as Washburn went up 14-0 with 7:59. The Ichabods would go up 21-0 after Mitch Schurig hit Marcus Meier for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Missouri Southern (1-6) drove down to the Ichabod 15-yard line and was forced to attempt a field goal, but Grant Bruner blocked the attempt and Kevin Neal, Jr., recovered it at the WU one and returned it to the Ichabod 20. The drive was short-lived as an Ichabod turnover gave the ball back to the Lions and five plays later scored to cut the Ichabod lead to 21-7 with 7:23 left in the first half.
Washburn then returned serve with a 15-play, 70-yard drive pushing their its lead to 28-7 capped by a Zach Willis 3-yard touchdown run with 1:27 to play before the half, however the Lions marched 74 yards in seven plays to score trimming the lead to 28-14 going into the half.
The Lions opened the second half with a 27-yard field goal to cut into the Ichabod lead at 28-17 with 11:29 remaining in the third quarter. The Ichabods and the Lions would trade possessions and then the Lions scored their final points on a mishandled snap on a punt leading to a MSSU safety for their final points of the game.
The Ichabods ripped off an 11-play, 80-yard drive when Mitch Schurig hit James Letcher, Jr., for a 16-yard touchdown pass as the Ichabods went up 35-19 with 13:48 to go in the game.
Marquise Manning interception the Lions' quarterback on their next drive setting up a three-play scoring drive taking 1:02 as Schurig connected with Taylon Peters for a 47-yard touchdown pass and a 42-19 lead after Kameron Lake's extra point.
The Ichabods took over and downs and wrapped up the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run by Zach Willis sending the Ichabods to the 49-19 win.
Washburn's defense held the Lions to 15 yards on the ground on 27 attempts and was led by Manning's eight tackles with one interception and four pass break ups.
Willis led the Ichabods on the ground with 91 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Schurig was 27 of 39 passing for 269 yards and three touchdowns and Letcher, Jr., had six catches for 39 yards and a score and Peters had 56 receiving yards on three catches and one touchdown.
The Ichabods were outgained 430 to 411 losing 30 yards on the team fumble on the punt mishap. The Ichabod defense was on the field for 94 Missouri Southern plays while the Ichabods ran 80 of their own.

 Up next
The Ichabods will be back in action on Nov. 2 when they will travel to Emporia State to face the Hornets at 2 p.m. The Ichabods will then host Pittsburg State on Nov. 9 wrapping up the home slate on senior day in Yager Stadium. The Ichabods will finish off the regular season at Nebraska-Kearney on Nov. 16.
