Baseball blanks Pitt State, split doubleheader

PITTSBURG, Kan. --- Washburn baseball split the twin bill with Pittsburg State on Friday, dropping game one, 12-3, before blanking the Gorillas the night cap, 7-0. The Ichabods will wrap up the series on Saturday from Al Ortolani Field with the rubber match set for a 11 am.

Game 1: Washburn 3, Pittsburg State 12
Steven Jacobson had a hand in all three runs for the Ichabods during the opener, driving in Brady Hoover in the fourth and ninth innings, before crossing home himself during the seventh. In addition to his two RBI, Jacobson finished 1-for-2 at the plate with two walks. Hoover meanwhile was 2-for-4 at the dish.

On the mound, Ichabod starter Josh Ramirez was solid as he recorded seven strikeouts while scattering three hits with two runs in seven innings of work. Reliever Brock Gilliam (1-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on two hits.

The Gorillas scratched across one run in the first and seventh. The Pitt State bats then came alive scoring four in the eighth before pushing the game out of reach with a six-run ninth.

Game 2: Washburn 7, Pittsburg State 0
In the night cap, Washburn starter Jacob Head (1-1) was phenomenal as the lefty recorded his first victory since March 10, 2017. Head dominated Pitt State leaving it hitless from the second to fifth frames en route to retiring 14 consecutive batters. Head finished his outing after the sixth, allowing just two hits with zero runs surrendered and five strikeouts.

Relievers Trevor Marreel and Jake Butterfield continued the solid effort as they tossed the final three innings, with neither surrendering hit, let alone a run.

Offensively, Jacobson, Hoover and Peter Shearer led the offense with two hits apiece, as the Ichabods out hit Pitt State, 9-2.

Washburn took advantage of a couple Pitt State errors in second, as Jacobson reached via error before advancing on a pitch wild. Shearer then came through with a two-out single to give the Ichabods a 1-0 lead.

Timely hitting in the fourth saw the Ichabods extend their margin to 5-0. Hoover got the offense going with a two-out triple to left-center. Jacobson then slapped a single through the left side scoring Hoover. Jacobson and Lane Harvey then crossed home on back-to-back at-bats with RBI going to Shearer and Michael Oyervides. Shearer then capped the rally as he scored on another wild pitch.

The Ichabods then stretched their advantage in the fifth with runs by Javis Larson and Mitchell Lady as Hoover notched his second two-out hit of the evening.
