Ichabod Baseball falls to Griffons in game two

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. --- It was a tough Sunday afternoon for the Washburn Ichabod baseball team as it fell, 8-3, to Missouri Western in the second of a three-game series. The Ichabods, which slipped to 9-11 on the year and 4-7 in MIAA play, out hit the Griffons, 12-11, but struggled to push runners across as they left nine on base, including eight in scoring position.

Javis Larson led the offense as he went 4-for-4 for the day with a pair of doubles. Brady Hoover was solid at the plate hitting 3-for-5, while Xavier De Leon also finished with a multi-hit day as he went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Trailing 4-0 in bottom half of the fifth, Larson began the inning with a lead-off a single before moving to third as Wyatt Featherston laced a hit through the middle. Larson then cross home as De Leon then came through with an RBI-single.

In the eighth, Hoover trimmed the deficit to 7-2, as he added to the Ichabod cause with a solo blast to left-center for his sixth home run of the season. Larson then drove in Kolton Meyer to make it 7-3 as they registered consecutive two-out doubles.

One run in each of the opening three frames gave the Griffons a 3-0 lead before scratching across an unearned run in the fifth. Missouri Western was able to capitalize twice more on Washburn miscues as part of a three-run seventh before scoring once more in the eighth.

Washburn starter Jacob Head (1-2) was dealt the loss as he surrendered four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Head worked six full frames and had three strikeouts. Relievers Trevor Marreel and Jack Weller then appeared for an inning each. Marreel worked the seventh while Weller tossed the ninth. Ramon Monje and Jake Butterfield meanwhile shared the eighth.

The Ichabods will try to claim the series tomorrow in the finale, first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
