Strong offense not enough as Baseball drops series opener

MARYVILLE, Mo. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team (12-14, 6-10 MIAA) dropped the series opener with Northwest Missouri (12-15, 8-8 MIAA), 14-9, on Sunday at Bearcat Field in MIAA action.
 
Washburn opened the scoring with a two-run second before plating three in the sixth and four in the seventh.
 
The long ball highlighted the later inning scoring run for Washburn as Brady Hoover and Michael Oyervides each went deep to left. For Hoover, he notched his seventh of the season with a lead-off blast in the sixth, while Oyervides' pinch-hit three-run shot in the seventh was his second of the year.
 
Hoover finished the afternoon 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs. It was hit seventh multi-hit outing of the season and also pushed his consecutive hit streak to seven games.
 
Also registering multiple hits on the day was Steven Jacobson (2-for-5), Wyatt Featherston (2-for-3) and Rorey Combs (2-for-4). Featherston finished with three RBI, driving in two in the sixth before adding more one more in the seventh. Combs also contributed to the offense with a RBI during the second.
 
Northwest scored four in the third before pushing two across in the sixth and tallying back-to-back four-run frames in the seventh and eighth.
 
Ichabod starter Josh Ramirez did not factor into the decision, after working five innings with four runs, two earned, on five hits. Reliever Brandon Gabler (3-1) was the pitcher of record allowing six runs, on five hits in 1.1 innings.
 
Washburn will close its three-game series against the Bearcats with a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 12 pm.
