EMPORIA, Kan. -- The No. 5-ranked Washburn women's tennis team extended their winning streak to nine matches and stay perfect in conference play after their 5-2 win over Emporia State on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods improve to an impressive record of 14-1 (5-0 MIAA) and the Hornets fall to 6-5 (3-2 MIAA).
Washburn swept the board in doubles and took an early 1-0 lead. At court No. 1,
Alexis Czapinski and
Logan Morrissey won 6-4. The duo of
Svea Crohn and
Jacqueline Engelbrecht secured the doubles point with their 6-3 decision at the No. 2 slot. Maria Soler Valverde and
Kinsey Fields won a 7-6 (7-5) battle to complete the doubles action.
The Ichabods carried their momentum into singles, where they won the first four matches and sealed the team victory. Czapinski got things started with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles to improve her perfect regular season record to 15-0. At fifth in the order, Crohn rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win. For the fifth-straight match, Soler Valverde put the match away for the Ichabods at No. 4 singles with her 6-3, 6-3 triumph. Engelbrecht completed the scoring for Washburn at the top of the lineup, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The Ichabods return to Topeka for a three match homestand beginning Tuesday, April 2, against William Jewell. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
