TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods split an MIAA doubleheader with Nebraska-Kearney coming back after an opening 9-5 loss to take the second game 8-2. Washburn will wrap up its home slate with Fort Hays State on Saturday. Between the two games six Ichabod seniors:
Savannah Moore,
Megan Deiter,
Taylor Kirk,
Ashley Ruder,
Emilee Baker and
Samantha Stallbaumer will all be honored between the games.
Game 1 - UNK 9, WU 5
The Lopers took the opener 9-5 scoring four runs in the top of the second jumpoing out to a 4-0 lead. Washburn scored its first run when
Savannah Moore was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Washburn scored three in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of one of three Loper errors in the first game cutting the lead to 8-4 following three runs by the Lopers in the top of the frame. Moore and
Winter Henry each had RBI in the inning.
Washburn scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh when
Brianna Fuchs reached on a three-base error by the Lopers and then scored on a sac fly by
Savannah Moore.
Raegen Hamm took the loss in the circle and Moore drove in three of the Ichabods' four runs in the game. Fuchs had two hits.
Game 2 – WU 8, UNK 2
After the Lopers scored a solo run in the first, the Ichabods came back with three runs in the bottom of the second on a three-run blast by Sienna Hall clearing the left field fence.
In the third, the Lopers added another run on a solo home run to cut the Ichabod lead to 3-2.
The Ichabods pushed the lead back to 4-2 on a solo home run by
Savannah Moore to straight away center.
Washburn added three more in the fourth inning to go up 7-2.
Ashley Ruder led off the inning with a triple to right center and would come around to score on a single by
Brianna Fuchs.
Winter Henry drove in a run on a single up the middle and then
Taylor Kirk drew a bases-loaded walk scoring
Savannah Moore.
In the sixth, the Ichabods took advantage of a Loper errors and added one more run when Kirk singled home Moore stretching the Washburn lead to 8-2.
Bailey Zuniga picked up the win improving to 10-6 pitching 4 and 2/3 innings striking out four while
Raegen Hamm pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief giving up three hits.
Halle England and
Ashley Ruder each had two hits and Hall drove in three.
