No. 5 Washburn crushes Lindenwood for 14th straight victory

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The No. 5 Washburn women's tennis team has clinched at least a share of the MIAA regular season title for the first time since the 2011-12 season after their dominating 7-0 shutout win against Lindenwood Friday afternoon. Washburn holds a one match lead in the conference standings over Central Oklahoma (13-3, 7-1 MIAA) and both teams are set to play their final conference matches this weekend. With the victory, the Ichabods extend their winning streak to 14 consecutive matches and improve their record to 19-1 (8-0 MIAA).

The Lindenwood Lions remain winless on the season and fall to 0-13 (0-5 MIAA).

Washburn took a quick lead in the dual after winning the doubles point. The third-ranked duo in the nation, Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey, recorded a quick 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Svea Crohn added a 6-2 win at court No. 2. The Ichabods claimed the No. 3 doubles match by way of a forfeit from Lindenwood.

The Lions also forfeited the No. 6 singles match, giving the Ichabods a 2-0 lead to start the singles portion of the dual. Czapinski, ranked second in Division II, dropped just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 win and improves to 19-1 at the No. 2 position this spring. Engelbrecht clinched the victory for Washburn at the top of the order, 6-2, 6-1. Maria Soler Valverde won her 15th straight match at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Morrissey topped her opponent, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 slot and Crohn added the final point for Washburn at No 5 as she blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
