BOLIVAR, Mo. – The No. 5 Washburn women's team captured their seventh MIAA title in program history Saturday afternoon with a 4-3 triumph over No. 28 Southwest Baptist. The Ichabods capped off a perfect conference schedule going 9-0 and improve to 20-1 overall this season while extending their winning streak to 15 matches.
 
The Ichabods last won a title in 2012 when they were co-champions and were the outright regular season champions in 2011.
 
The Bearcats drop to 9-6 (5-3 MIAA) this season with the loss.
 
The Ichabods earned the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After the Bearcats won the No. 3 match, Jacqueline Engelbrecht and Svea Crohn came back strong and blanked their opponents 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. The point would be decided in a battle at court No. 1 between Alexis Czapinski / Logan Morrissey, the third-ranked duo in Division II, and sixth-ranked Jill Van Den Dungen / Klara Vickov. It came down to a tiebreaker that Czapinski and Morrisey claimed, 7-6 (7-3).
 
The Bearcats came out strong in the singles competition, grabbing victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Trailing 2-1, Washburn answered with wins at the next three matches to clinch the dual. Czapinski sparked the winning charge with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles to tie up the match. She posted her 20th victory of the spring season and is now 20-1. Crohn followed with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at the fifth slot for her ninth-straight victory. Maria Soler Valverde sealed the win with a dominant performance at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1, for her 16th-straight victory.
 
The Ichabods play their final two matches of the regular season next weekend starting at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas on Friday, April 19. The season finale will be against Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday, April 20, in Durant, Okla.
