HAYS, Kan. --- The Washburn Ichabod baseball team pushed its consecutive game win streak to four on Saturday, taking game two of its series with Fort Hays State, 16-8, to secure the series win. With the result, the Ichabods improved to 17-17 overall and 10-13 in the conference play.
Trailing 7-2 after the fifth the Ichabod bats awoke late, producing 14 runs on 10 hits, scoring four in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth before capping the late outburst with a five-run ninth.
Washburn opened the scoring in the third with a solo shot by
Lane Harvey.
Rorey Combs then tied the game at 2-2 with had a lead-off home run in the fourth after the Tigers pushed two across during the third.
After Fort Hays State plated five runs in the fifth, the Ichabods began in the sixth as Combs found the right-center gap for a double, while
Jake Hahn scored on the play after reaching as he was hit by a pitch to lead off the innings.
Xavier De Leon and
Braden Kirkpatrick touched home with RBI ground outs from
Brady Hoover and
Javis Larson, respectively, trimming the deficit to 7-5.
The Ichabods then quickly began the seventh with two runners on as Harvey and Hahn each reached on a hit by pitch. After earning the pass to first, Harvey soon advanced to third with a pair of steals. De Leon then drove him across, while Hahn moved to second before tying the game with help from Combs.
Washburn then assumed an 8-7 advantage, capitalizing on a Tiger throwing miscue which allowed De Leon to score from second for the go-ahead run.
Larson and
Wyatt Featherston then added to the Ichabod margin in the eighth, with Larson scoring on a passed ball while a RBI-single from Harvey pushed Featherston in.
In the ninth, Combs continued to the offensive explosion with another solo shot for his third home run of the season.
Michael Oyervides and Larson then tallied back-to-back RBI singles before Featherston was pushed across on a bases loaded walk to cap the scoring.
Fort Hays State pulled one run back in the ninth but hopes of a rally cut short as Ichabod reliever
Jake Butterfield slammed the door.
Offensively, seven Ichabods recorded hits in the effort with Combs leading the way with four RBI as he was 3-for-5 at the plate. Also notching multi-hit performances was Oyervides and Larson who were each 2-for-5, while Harvey was 2-for-3. Once on base, the Ichabods put their speed to use as they collected seven steals on the day, one shy of their season-high.
Reliever
Nathan Lorenzen (2-1) was credited with the victory as he allowed one hit in three scoreless innings, after starter
Jacob Head made way following his five innings of work with seven runs on 10 hits. Butterfield meanwhile allowed one run on one hit as he worked the ninth.
The Ichabods conclude their series with the Tigers on Sunday, first pitch from Larks Park is scheduled for 12 pm.
