WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- The No. 5 Washburn women's tennis team narrowly lost 4-3 at No. 23 Midwestern State on Friday. It was just the second loss of the season for the Ichabods as they move to 20-2 overall this season.

The Midwestern State Mustangs are now 16-5 and have won their last seven matches.

The Ichabods won the doubles point to take an early lead. Maria Soler Valverde and Kinsey Fields posted a quick 6-1 victory on court three to get things started. After the Mustangs answered with a win of their own at No. 2 doubles, Alexis Czapinski and Logan Morrissey clinched the doubles point at the top flight with a 6-3 win.

It was back and forth scoring to start out the singles competition. Morrissey put Washburn up 2-0 with her 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot. Midwestern State won the match at court No. 2 for its first point of the match. Soler Valverde completed her match next at No. 3 singles and won 6-4, 6-3. The Mustangs went on to claim the next three singles matches with wins at Nos. 1, 6, and 5 to clinch the 4-3 victory

The loss snapped a 15 match winning streak for the Ichabods and gives them their first loss to a Division II opponent this season. Washburn's only other loss this season was to Air Force Academy (Division I).

The Ichabods close out the regular season tomorrow at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The match in Durant, Okla., is scheduled for 1 p.m.
