EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod softball team was two outs from a doubleheader sweep over the No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos but a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh of the second game sent UCO to a split on the conference twin bill. Washburn will wrap up the regular season with MIAA games at Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western next weekend.
Game 1 - WU 5, UCO 1
The Ichabods snapped the No. 2-ranked Bronchos perfect season at home with a 5-1 win ending UCO's 20-game winning streak.
After UCO, who suffered only its fourth loss of the season and second in the MIAA (38-4, 20-2 MIAA), scored its only run of the game in the third inning.
In the fifth, the Ichabods (24-22, 15-7 MIAA) tied the score after
Samantha Stallbaumer reached on a bunt single and then stole second and scored on a double to center by
Savannah Moore knotting the score at 1-1.
In the seven, the Ichabods sent four runs home jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Stallbaumer reached on a single and
Brianna Fuchs had a single of her own. A fielder's choice RBI by Moore scored Stallbaumer and then
Taylor Kirk cleared the bases with a three-run bomb to right center putting Washburn up 5-1.
The Bronchos were retied with a double play to end the game as
Bailey Zuniga tossed the complete-game win scattering six hits improving to 12-7 on the season.
Stallbaumer finished with three hits and Fuchs and Moore each had two in the win.
Game 2 - UCO 4, WU 3
Washburn jumped out in front of the second game when
Taylor Kirk led off the second inning with a double and then scored on a ground out by
Maddie Stipsits.
UCO scored two runs in the fourth going up one, but the Ichabods came back with a solo run in the fifth when Fuchs' single scored
Bri Francis who doubled.
Washburn took the lead in the sixth at 3-2 on an RBI by Francis scoring
Winter Henry who reached on an error.
However in the seventh, with one out, JoBi Heath's walk-off homer gave the Bronchos the 4-3 win.
Raegen Hamm struck out three in the loss and Kirk had two hits and Francis added two of her own.
