Balanced effort helps Baseball rally in non-conference action

EDMOND, Okla. --- In spite of an early deficit, Washburn baseball (21-19) rallied to score nine unanswered runs on Wednesday, claiming a 10-5 non-conference victory over Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, Okla. The Ichabods had eight different scorers touch home on 17 hits, with 10 batters notching a hit.

Javis Larson led the way with his 14th multi-hit performance and notched his fourth four-hit game of the season, finishing the day with an impressive 4-for-4 outing.

Michael Oyervides meanwhile put together a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a walk. Also finishing with a multiple hits in the effort was Peter Shearer and Wyatt Featherston and they each were 2-for-5, while Featherston drove in three runs to help the cause.

After being held hitless twice during the opening three frames, the Ichabods bats began to produce in the fourth. Brady Hoover tallied the first Washburn run of the night, scoring on a one out single by Oyervides. Lane Harvey then registered a two-RBI double to score Larson and Featherston on the play and tying score at 3-3.

Washburn then pieced together another three-run frame in the fifth to assume a 6-3 margin. Hoover pushed Xavier De Leon across for the go-ahead run, before Shearer and Oyervides added to the Ichabod cause on a single to shallow center by Featherston.

Shearer then scored again in the seventh with help from Featherston, before De Leon and Steven Jacobson were pushed across in the eighth. Mark Wanner also scored for the Ichabods as he crossed home in the ninth on Jake Hahn single.

Oklahoma Christian built an early lead in the first as they pushed three across on four hits. The Eagle offense then struggled as they produced two hits during the next seven innings. Oklahoma Christian then cut the Ichabod advantage in half as it scored two unearned runs during the ninth.

Washburn reliever Skyler Proctor was credited with his first career win as he worked two perfect innings with two strikeouts. Jared Sharp also appeared in relief, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing one hit with strikeouts. Starter Trevor Marreel did not factor in the result after conceding three runs on five hits in two innings of work. Jack Weller also appeared for the Ichabods as he worked the ninth.

The Ichabods return to action in the Sooner State on Friday when they open their three-game MIAA series with Central Oklahoma. First pitch from Wendell Simmons Field is slated for 6 pm.
