EDMOND, Okla. --- A four-run fourth provided enough breathing room for the Washburn Ichabod baseball team (22-20, 13-16 MIAA) on Saturday en route to an 8-2 victory, trying the series at 1-1. The Ichabods resume action on Sunday, when they wrap up the series and their 2019 road schedule from Wendell Simmons Field with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
Â
Washburn out hit Central Oklahoma, 11-5, with four batters notching multi-hit performances.
Michael Oyervides led the effort with his third-career three-hit day, finishing the afternoon 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI.
Â
Peter Shearer and
Javis Larson each followed as they posted a 2-for-4 day respectively, while
Lane Harvey registered a 2-for-3 outing with a pair of runs batted in.
Â
After the Bronchos tallied a run in the first, Washburn evened the score during the second with a single by Larson, which pushed
Peter Shearer across following a lead-off double.
Â
Steven Jacobson then reached base on a two-out error in the fourth with two runners on. As a result of the Broncho miscue Oyverides scored on the play for the go-ahead run, while Larson moved from first to third.
Lane Harvey then added to the cause, driving Larson and Jacobson across on his second triple of the season.
Â
Oyervides then extended the Ichabod advantage from the plate, beginning in the fifth with a two-run single allowing Larson and
Rorey Combs to push the Washburn margin to 6-1. Then in the ninth, another two-RBI single by Oyervides saw the Washburn lead grew to 8-2 with
Mitchell Lady and
Xavier De Leon crossing home for the score.
Â
Central Oklahoma's only other run of the afternoon was a solo home run in the seventh.
Â
With the ample run support from the offense, Washburn starter
Jacob Head (3-4) was credited with the win following a dominant outing that saw him record six strikeouts and surrender two runs on five hits in a season-high eight innings of work. Head then made way for a relief appearance by
Bailey Jenkins in the ninth.
