EDMOND, Okla. -- The Washburn Ichabod opened the MIAA Tournament with a 2-1 win over Emporia State and will move on to to face the winner of the Pittsburg State/Missouri Western game at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Ichabods (27-24) jumped on the board first when
Samantha Stallbaumer led off the game with a triple to center field and then scored on a fielder's choice / sac bunt by
Savannah Moore putting the Ichabods up 1-0 lead.
The Hornets tied the game with a home run to center field by Hanna Steeby in the fourth inning. Washburn took the lead on an RBI single by Sienna Hall scoring
Winter Henry who reached on an error by the shortstop.
In the top of the fifth,
Bailey Zuniga entered the game and pitched the final three innings allowing one hit picking up her second save of the season securing the win for
Raegen Hamm who improved to 14-13 on the season. Hamm struck out two allowing two hits and one earned run.
Stallbaumer had two of the Ichabods five hits as
Savannah Moore,
Winter Henry and Hall.
The win improved the Ichabods to 34-47 all-time in the MIAA Tournament and snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Hornets picking up the first win over ESU in the MIAA since a 6-3 win in 1998.
