TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn soccer team defeated MIAA rival, Emporia State, for the first time in four years Sunday afternoon as the Ichabods won 3-1 over the Hornets. The Ichabods improve thier record to 4-1 and the Hornets move to 4-2 on the season.
At the start of the match the Ichabods attacked first, with two shots in two minutes. In the 15th minute,
Olivia Grasso took a free kick from 35-yards out and found the top left corner of the net to put the Ichabods on the board first. In the 29th minute,
Paige Ledesma rebounded a shot from Grasso to give the Ichabods a 2-0 lead over the Hornets. Ledesma recorded her first goal of the 2019 season.
Raegan Wells saved all three shots on goal the Hornets took. The Ichabod defense was led by
Mattie Miano and
Emily Michaelis, keeping the Hornets to only four shot attempts.
In the second half both teams came out aggressive. The Hornets took the first four shot attempts on goal, but could not find the back of the net. In the 59th minute, the Ichbods had a break away and Grasso took advantage. She scored her second goal of the game to give the squad a 3-0 lead. Emporia answered back with a goal in the 82nd minute of the match, chipping away at the Ichabods' lead. Washburn held Emporia to limited chances at the net and won the match, 3-1.
Wells finished the match with six saves and tallied another win. Grasso tallied five points on the day as she netted two goals and had one assist.
Tera Lynch added two shots on goal for the Ichabods. The teams tied in shots on goal with seven each.
The Washburn soccer team will travel Hays, Kan. on Friday, Sept. 27 to take on the Fort Hays Tigers. The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m.
