TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabod softball team split a pair of games on the second day of the Topeka portion of the ESU Classic topping Maryville (Mo.) for the second time in six days before falling to Minnesota-Duluth in the nightcap. The Ichabods are scheduled to finish off the weekend with two more games on Sunday scheduled at 12:30 pm with Sioux Falls and Wayne State at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Washburn 5, Maryville (Mo.) 2
The Ichabod jumped on the board first in the top of the first on an RBI single by
Bri Francis scoring
Brianna Fuchs who led off the game with a single to left however the Saints scored the first of their two unearned runs in the inning tying the score 1-1. Washburn went back in front in the top of the third on an RBI single by
Hadley Kerschen scoring Fuchs who reached on a triple en route to a four-hit game.
In the bottom of the third, the Saints knotted the score at 2-2 taking advantage of an Ichabod error but the Ichabods came back with two runs in the fourth on a 2-RBI single by
Jenna Moore sending Fuchs and
Ellie Dixon home after their singles and then the Ichabods wrapped up the scoring with a solo run in the fifth on an RBI triple by
Kimi Patterson scoring
Cailey Oldemeyer.
Raegen Hamm picked up the win striking out seven scattering five hits and no earned runs in the complete-game win.
The Ichabods pounded out 15 hits overall with Fuchs recording four and Kerschen,
Winter Henry, Francis, Patterson and Dixon all getting two hits each.
Game 2 – Minnesota Duluth 10, Washburn 2
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and Washburn responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Moore scoring Dixon after leading off the inning with a single of her own. However the Bulldogs broke the game open with two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the sixth leading to the 10-2 win.
Francis connected on her first home run of the year in the sixth.
Washburn finished with six hits as
Ashton Friend had three to lead the Ichabods.
Ashlie Thissen took the loss in the circle for the Ichabods.
