Washburn takes game two against Missouri Western, 11-3

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Ichabod baseball offense put up 11 runs on 13 hits as Washburn defeated Missouri Western, 11-3, on Saturday afternoon. Washburn is now 10-8 (2-0 MIAA) while Missouri Western drops to 4-13 (0-2 MIAA) on the year.

Washburn's lefty starter Jacob Head retired the side in order to start the game with an efficient six pitch first inning. He ran into some trouble in the second when he walked the leadoff batter and gave up back-to-back singles. The Griffons took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly before Head got the next two outs to leave two runners stranded.

The Ichabods responded with two in the home half of the inning. A single, walk, and a Missouri Western fielding error loaded the bases for Kros Bay, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli. Wyatt Featherston followed that with single down the right field line to get Carson Sader home.

Missouri Western evened the score in the top of third after hitting a leadoff triple and then scoring on a single.

Eric Hinostroza got things going for Washburn in the bottom of the third with a single and then made it to second on a stolen base. He put the Ichabods back in front, 3-2, five pitches later when Zion Bowlin doubled to right field.

The Ichabods added one more run in the fourth, but the Griffons answered with one in the sixth to make it a one run game again at 4-3.

Washburn opened up the game in the seventh with four runs on four hits to take an 8-3 lead. Featherston hit a deep double to the fence and advanced to third on a single by Xavier De Leon. Hinostroza laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to score Featherston and move De Leon into scoring position. Bowlin got ahold of the first pitch in the at bat and poked it through the left side for an RBI. Brett Ingram was walked on four pitches and then he and Bowlin scored on Clark-Chiapparelli's triple.

The Ichabods finished out their scoring with three runs on three hits in the eighth frame. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Hinostroza, who hit an RBI single. With the bases still juiced, Bowlin hit another single through the left side to drive home two and make it 11-3 in favor of the Ichabods.

Head remains undefeated in five starts and improves to 5-0. He tossed seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits and walked two. He also struck out two. Brandon Gabler and Braden Minor each threw one scoreless inning in relief.

Featherston had a perfect day at the plate, going 4-for-4 and scored two runs and knocked in two more. Bowlin finished the afternoon 3-for-5 and was responsible for five of Washburn's runs as he scored once and collected a team-high four RBI. Hinstroza was 2-for-4 and had two RBI to go with one run scored.

The Ichabods will be going for the series sweep tomorrow (March 1) at Falley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
