TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 1-ranked Washburn volleyball team utilized a balanced offensive attack to record its eighth sweep of the season as the Ichabods topped Newman, 3-0, on Friday evening.
Washburn won by the set scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-12 to improve to 13-1 (5-0 MIAA) on the season.
After losing the opening point, the Ichabods quickly took control of the first set and moved in front, 5-1. An 8-1 scoring run pushed Washburn's lead to 16-7 and then back-to-back kills by
Jalyn Stevenson made it a 10 point advantage at 18-8. The Ichabods won the final three points to take game one, 25-12.
Washburn broke a 2-2 tie with two-straight kills from
Allison Maxwell and extended its lead to 7-3 after a 3-0 mini run. The Ichabods put together a 5-0 run midway through the frame that consisted of four kills from three different players and a service ace by Stevenson to make it 17-9 in favor of Washburn. The Jets (5-7, 1-5 MIAA) hung in there and pulled within four points at 22-18, but couldn't overcome the deficit as the Ichabods won the second set, 25-19.
It was all Washburn in the final set as the Ichabods rattled off seven-straight points to start the third and led 11-2 after a block from Maxwell and
Genna Berg. The Ichabods cruised to the 25-12 win with the final point being won on a kill by
Taryn Pridgett.
Washburn hit .343 for the match while Newman finished with a .030 attacking percentage. The Ichabods led in kills, 46-22, and recorded seven total blocks, which was five more than the Jets.
Five Ichabods notched seven or more kills with four of those finishing with an attacking percentage above .400. Stevenson registered nine kills and eight digs to go with a .474 hitting percentage. Maxwell had eight kills and had five block assists. Fitzgibbons also landed eight kills and close behind were
Genna Berg and
Kelsey Gordon with seven kills apiece.
Setter
Allison Sadler finished with 34 assists. Defensively in the back court,
Faith Rottinghaus scooped up 14 digs and
Taylor Antonowich also finished in double-figures with 12.
The Jets were led by Riley Daugherty, who finished with eight kills and 13 digs.
The Ichabods wrap up the weekend tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 2) against Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos have won five in a row and hold a record of 12-2 (5-1 MIAA) after sweeping Emporia State tonight. First serve in Lee Arena is set for 2 p.m.
