TOPEKA, Kan. – Ichabods lose 2-1 in overtime against No. 8 Central Missouri. It is Washburn's first loss at home this season.
For the first 45 minutes of the match, the two teams were just about even. Both teams shot four times and the Jennies atempted one more corner kick. While Central Missouri held the ball for almost 65% of the first half, the Ichabod defense gave nothing easy to the Jennies' offense.
Washburn keeper,
Raegan Wells, saved three shots in the first half keeping the game scoreless heading into the second half. She ended the night with six saves.
Things picked up on both sides in the second half. Washburn possessed the ball well and outshot the Jennies six to five. The game remained tight up until the 85
th minute when Ichabods'
Mackenzie Menke dribbled the ball almost half the field to take a long shot from outside the eighteen. Menke placed the ball perfectly below the crossbar just out of reach of the Central Missouri keeper. It was the only shot Menke took, and it was what the Ichabods needed.
Khloe Schuckman also helped in the second half having two shots on goal and three on the game.
The game seemed over going into the final minute but a foul call on Washburn gave Central Missouri a free shot with 20 seconds left. Jennies' Sydney Leslie took that opportunity to tie it up and into overtime.
The first period of extra time went about the same as the first half. Only one shot was taken by either team. In the second 10-minute period, each team took two shots. Central Missouri forward Caroline Cole ended the game in the final two minutes.
The Ichabods are back at Yager Stadium on Sunday, October 24 as they take on the Missouri Southern Lions. The match will begin at 1 p.m.
