Ichabods wrap up regular season with Lions on Senior Day Saturday

FOR STARTERS

•The Washburn Ichabods wrap up the regular season looking for their sixth-straight win in the regular season finale hosting Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. in Yager Stadium on senior day.
•The group of seniors include K.J. Turner, Garret Barnett-Kruger, Mitch Schurig, James Letcher, Jr., Chase Williams, Lane Spiker, Marquise Manning, Jacob Anderson, Matthew Harris, Malick Fall, Brooks Peavler, Zach Willis, Jeremy Luck, Colton Dunkle and Jace Williams and they will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
•The Ichabods are coming off a 28-26 win over Pittsburg State on Saturday in Carnie Smith Stadium where they won their fourth game in a row over the Gorillas.
•The Lions were topped by Northwest Missouri 49-7 last time out at home and have lost their last three games.
•The Ichabods lead the all-time series with the Lions 26-21-1 and have won the last five in the series.
•The Lions' last win in the series came on Sept. 27, 2014 in a 42-21 win in Joplin.
•Washburn has won 18 of the last 20 in the series.
•The Ichabods have won their last six games played in Yager Stadium.
•The Washburn Ichabods were tabbed No. 24 in the latest American Football Coaches Association top 25 poll. The ranking is the first appearance for the Ichabods in the national poll since Nov. 11, 2013.
•The Ichabods are ranked eighth in the nation in third down conversions moving the chains on 52 percent of their attempts.
•The Ichabods are ranked 21st in the nation in completion percentage at 63 percent.
•The Ichabods are 16th in the nation in kickoff return defense allowing an average of 15.25.
•The Ichabods are 12th in the nation in red•one defense.
Malick Fall is six in the nation in sacks at 1.10 per game which also leads the MIAA.
James Letcher, Jr. is 13th in the nation in all-purpose yards at 150.9 yards per game.
Mitch Schurig is sixth in the nation in completion percentage (68.1) and 21st in the nation in passing touchdowns (22).

•was named head coach of the Ichabod football program Dec. 28, 2001.
•is 129-87 (.599) in his 20th season as the Ichabod head coach.
•is 111-75 (.603) against the MIAA.
•has led the Ichabods to three NCAA Playoff appearances and four bowl appearances and three bowl championships.
•led the Ichabods to the 2005 MIAA regular season outright championship.
•led the Ichabods to the program's first 10-win season and their first NCAA or NAIA playoff game victory in school history with a win over Abilene Christian during the 2011 season.
•is Washburn's all-time winningest football coach with 128 wins.

Missouri Southern head coach Atiba Bradley . . . 
•named the 14th head football coach in the history of Missouri Southern on February 5, 2021.
•becomes the first graduate of Missouri Southern to lead the Southern football program
•is 4-7 in his second season as the Lions head coach after going 1-0 in the only game of the spring 2021.
•He comes to Missouri Southern from NCAA Division II McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois where he was the Bearcats defensive coordinator. Prior to that, he served as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at NCAA Division I FCS University of South Dakota from January of 2016 through December of 2018. Bradley spent three years from 2013-16 at NCAA Division I FCS Western Illinois as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
•As a player at MSSU, Bradley was a two-time All-MIAA honorable mention pick as a linebacker.
•He had four tackles against the Ichabods on Nov. 15, 2003 in a 38-35 Washburn win in Topeka and had nine tackles with six solo stops and a tackle for loss against the Ichabods on Nov. 6, 2004 in Washburn's 58-43 win in Joplin. On Oct. 29, 2005 in Topeka, he recorded 15 tackles with two for loss and a sack in Washburn's 49-35 win in Topeka.
•Has never coached against Washburn.
 
ICHABODS ON THE CAREER CHARTS
•Ichabod running back Zach Willis sits 11th on the all-time rushing chart with 1,721 yards. He became the 11th Ichabod to reach at least 1,600 yards on the ground in a career. Willis also is tied for 12th with 17 career rushing touchdowns.
•Willis also has a career yards per attempt of 6.04 per carry as an Ichabod, which is sixth on the all-time chart behind Corey Crain who averaged 6.11 yards per carry.
•Ichabod quarterback Mitch Schurig has passed for 6,386 yards in his career which is fourth on the Ichabod career chart. Only Dane Simoneau (11,291), Jordan Brill (7,041), Tyler Schuerman (6,525) have thrown for more in a Washburn uniform.
•Schurig's 487 career pass completions is second all-time at Washburn trailing Dane Simoneau who had 751 from 2007-11.
•Schurig has also thrown for 60 touchdowns which is second all-time at Washburn. The school record holder is Simoneau with 102.
•Schurig is Washburn's all-time leader in passing completion percentage at 64.2 percent ahead of current coach Dane Simoneau who completed 58 percent of his passes.
•Schurig is also ranked fifth in total offense for a career with 6,249 yards.
James Letcher, Jr.'s 26.10 yards per kickoff return is third all-time at Washburn.
•Letcher, Jr.'s 136 career receptions is fifth on the all-time chart at Washburn and his 18 touchdown receptions is eighth.
•Letcher, Jr.'s two career kickoffs returned for touchdown is tied for first all-time at Washburn with Fletcher Terrell and Cary Williams and his 27.27 yards per return is second behind Terrell's 27.32 yards per return.
Jace Williams' 14 touchdown receptions is tied for 11th all-time at Washburn.
Lane Spiker's 40.06 yards per punt average is fourth in school history … all-time leader Aaron Hummert (2011-14) had an average of 40.33.
 
NOTING THE LIONS
•The Lions are 3-7 this season and have lost their last three games.
•Nathan Glads leads the Lions on the ground with 692 yards rushing averaging 69.2 yards per game with five touchdowns.
•Dawson Herl has thrown for 1,977 yards and 13 touchdowns averaging 197.7 yards per game with five interceptions and is averaging 206.3 yards per game in total offense.
•Brian Boyd, Jr., has a team-high 41 catches for 763 yards and six touchdowns averaging 18.6 yards per catch.
•Nick Williams has hit 12 of 19 field goal attempts and all 22 extra points.
•Richard Jordan, Jr. leads the team with 104 tackles adding 11.5 tackles for loss for 50 yards and 4.5 sacks for 29 yards and four forced fumbles.
•The Lions are averaging 20.6 points per game while allowing 30.9 and they are averaging 338.8 yards per game in total offense allowing 419.4.
 
LAST MEETING WITH MISSOURI SOUTHERN
(Oct. 19, 2019) JOPLIN, Mo. – The Washburn Ichabod football team won its second game in a row with a 49-19 win over Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon improving to 3-4 on the season.
The Ichabods scored their first points of the game taking advantage of a Lion fumble and Josh Wright returned it 47 for a touchdown putting Washburn out to a 7-0 lead with 8:35 to go in the first quarter. On the Lions' next drive, the Ichabods Chase Williams blocked a Lion punt and returned it 18 yards for a score as Washburn went up 14-0 with 7:59. The Ichabods would go up 21-0 after Mitch Schurig hit Marcus Meier for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Missouri Southern (1-6) drove down to the Ichabod 15-yard line and was forced to attempt a field goal, but Grant Bruner blocked the attempt and Kevin Neal, Jr., recovered it at the WU one and returned it to the Ichabod 20. The drive was short-lived as an Ichabod turnover gave the ball back to the Lions and five plays later scored to cut the Ichabod lead to 21-7 with 7:23 left in the first half.
Washburn then returned serve with a 15-play, 70-yard drive pushing their its lead to 28-7 capped by a •ack Willis 3-yard touchdown run with 1:27 to play before the half, however the Lions marched 74 yards in seven plays to score trimming the lead to 28-14 going into the half.
The Lions opened the second half with a 27-yard field goal to cut into the Ichabod lead at 28-17 with 11:29 remaining in the third quarter. The Ichabods and the Lions would trade possessions and then the Lions scored their final points on a mishandled snap on a punt leading to a MSSU safety for their final points of the game.
The Ichabods ripped off an 11-play, 80-yard drive when Mitch Schurig hit James Letcher, Jr., for a 16-yard touchdown pass as the Ichabods went up 35-19 with 13:48 to go in the game.
Marquise Manning interception the Lions' quarterback on their next drive setting up a three-play scoring drive taking 1:02 as Schurig connected with Taylon Peters for a 47-yard touchdown pass and a 42-19 lead after Kameron Lake's extra point.
The Ichabods took over and downs and wrapped up the scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run by Zach Willis sending the Ichabods to the 49-19 win.
Washburn's defense held the Lions to 15 yards on the ground on 27 attempts and was led by Manning's eight tackles with one interception and four pass break ups.
Willis led the Ichabods on the ground with 91 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Schurig was 27 of 39 passing for 269 yards and three touchdowns and Letcher, Jr., had six catches for 39 yards and a score and Peters had 56 receiving yards on three catches and one touchdown.
The Ichabods were outgained 430 to 411 losing 30 yards on the team fumble on the punt mishap. The Ichabod defense was on the field for 94 Missouri Southern plays while the Ichabods ran 80 of their own.
Craig Schurig picked up his 100th MIAA win in the game and his 118th overall as the Ichabod head coach.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE ICHABODS
(Nov. 6, 2021) PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods' Jace Williams blocked a potential game-winning field goal with 30 seconds to play as the Ichabods survived 10 penalties and three turnovers in a 28-26 win at Carnie Smith Stadium. Washburn improves to 8-2 on the season with the win winning its fourth-straight game over the Gorillas and the fourth in a row in Pittsburg. 
After the Ichabods (8-2) moved the ball to the Pitt State 11, Washburn fumbled with 3:24 to play leading 28-26. Pitt State (7-3) took over and drove down to the WU 16 before Cross Holmes 26-yard field was blocked by Williams securing the win after one kneel down by the Ichabods.
The Ichabods took the early lead at 7-0 after an interception by Peyton Lane set up the Washburn 3-yard line. Zach Willis scored on the next play putting the Ichabods up.
The Gorillas tied the score on a scoop and score with 8:54 to play in the first quarter to wrap up the first quarter scoring.
Pittsburg State took the lead wrapping up a 12-play, 71-yard drive going up 14-7 but the Ichabods came back on their next drive tying the score at 14 on a Taylon Peters 6-yard run with 6:26 to play in the half.
After a 22-yard field goal by the Gorillas putting them up 17-14, Washburn took a 21-17 lead right before the half when Mitch Schurig hit James Letcher, Jr., on a 12-yard pass.
Neither team scored in the third quarter and the Ichabods opened the fourth quarter with a 16-play, 93-yard drive finished off by a 5-yard pass and catch from Schurig to Letcher as Washburn went up 28-17.
Pitt State cut the score to 28-20 at a field goal with 9:05 to play in the game and on the ensuing kickoff by the Gorillas, the Ichabods fumbled the kick and with 6:58 to go, the Gorillas cut the lead back to 28-26 but the 2-point conversion failed setting up the final minutes for the Ichabod win.
Willis finished with 73 yards on 15 carries. Schurig finished the game 15 of 21 passing with two scores.
Letcher had nine catches for 128 yards and two scores tallying 219 all-purpose yards.
Defensively the Ichabods were led by Grant Bruner who had a career-high 20 tackles with 10 solo stops adding a tackle for loss. Kevin Neal, Jr. had 8 tackles as the team finished with four sacks and six tackles for loss.
Washburn was outgained 400 to 316 in the game and was flagged for 10 penalties for 106 yards while Pitt State had eight for 73.
 
 A WIN OVER MISSOURI SOUTHERN WOULD
•move Washburn to 9-2 to end the regular season.
•be the most wins in a regular season since Washburn had nine in 2011 finishing the year 10-2.

Grant Bruner had a career-high 20 tackles including 10 solo stops and adding a tackle for loss in the Ichabods' 28-26 win over Pittsburg State. He had 13 tackles in the second half and had four tackles on the Gorillas' final drive prior to the blocked field goal attempt. He became the seventh Ichabod in program history to record at least 20 tackles and the 20 tackles rank tied for fourth on the Ichabod single-game chart.
 
ICHABOD FOOTBALL HISTORY
•Washburn is 563-587-44 (.484) in the 129th year of Ichabod football.
•The Ichabods are ranked 15th in NCAA Division II history in wins.
•The Ichabods have 12 conference titles with the last coming in 2005 in the MIAA.
•Washburn has had 171 first team all-MIAA picks and 53 first team all-MIAA selections.
•Washburn has had 83 All-American selections and 56 All-American picks since joining the NCAA Division II ranks in 1989.
