Game Recap: Baseball |

Washburn Baseball falls in season opener at Regis

DENVER -- The Washburn baseball team took the field for the first time in 11 months on Friday afternoon to begin the 2021 season on the road against Regis University. The Ichabod offense came alive too late and fell short in the high-scoring contest to the Rangers, 15-10.

Eric Hinostroza got things going quickly for Washburn (0-1) as he started the game with a leadoff single up the middle. Batting third, Parker Dunn hit a two-run homer to give the Ichabods an early 2-0 lead.

The Rangers (1-0) had two hits and capitalized on two Ichabod errors to score one run in the bottom half of the first inning to cut Washburn's lead to 2-1.

Back-to-back doubles and a three-run shot started the bottom of the second and gave Regis its first lead of the game at 4-2. The Rangers added one run in the fourth and three in the fifth to push the score to 8-2 in their favor.

The Rangers exploded for seven runs on four hits and capitalized an Ichabod error in the sixth inning to make it a double-digit lead at 15-3.

In the top of the seventh, Zion Bowlin drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a throwing error and then reached third on a wild pitch. Kros Bay brought him home with a sacrifice fly. With runners on first and second with two outs, Wyatt Featherston hit a single that scored Mark Wanner from second before Featherston was thrown out at second base.

On the mound, Casey Steward retired the side in order after the seventh inning stretch. Steward finished his Ichabod debut with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.

The Ichabod bats started to come alive again in the eighth inning as Washburn scored one run on four hits in the frame. Tyler Clark-Chiapparelli hit the fourth single of the inning to plate Xavier De Leon.

The Rangers' pitching and defense struggled in the top of the ninth and the Ichabods jumped on the opportunity. Cole Emerson reached on an error and then back-to-back walks juiced the bases. Brett Ingram stepped up to the plate and launched a grand slam to make it a 15-8 game. Washburn added one final run as Dunn scored as a result of the Rangers' third miscue of the inning.

The Rangers out-hit the Ichabods, 15-12, and both teams committed four errors. As a pinch hitter, Ingram was 2-2 at the plate and had four RBI. Dunn was 2-5 and scored two runs. Hinostroza, De Leon, and Carson Sader also recorded two hits and scored one run in the game.

Washburn starter Brock Gilliam picked up the loss after allowing four runs and seven hits over 2.1 innings pitched. The Rangers' Justin Kleinsorge earned the win, tossing six innings and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out nine.

The Ichabods are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow (Saturday) against the Rangers with the first game starting at 12 p.m. CST.
