TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn women's tennis team defeated William Jewell, 7-0, in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. The Ichabods improve to 2-0 this season and the Cardinals drop to 0-5.
 
The women opened the game strong as they swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. Maria Soler Valverde and Sydnee Foster quickly swept their match, 6-0, from the No. 2 spot to give the Ichabods an advantage. The duo of Marta Torres and Cadence Lynn then defeated their opponents, 6-1, from the first doubles spot. 
 
To start off singles competition, Torres swept her opponent with scores of 6-0 from the top of the lineup to earn her first singles win as an Ichabod. Kinsey Fields then followed suit, sweeping her opponent, 6-0 and 6-0, to win from the No. 3 spot. Following along in her teammates' footsteps, Maja Jung also defeated her opponent with two sweeps of 6-0 from the second spot. Foster closed it out by defeating her opponent by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 from the No. 4 spot. The Ichabods earned their last two points by default, as the Cardinals did not have enough players for the fifth and sixth spots.
 
The Ichabods travel to Tulsa, Okla., to face Southeastern Oklahoma State on Feb. 27. The match is set for 2 p.m. at LaFortune Park.
