Washburn softball wraps up perfect weekend with doubleheader sweep on final day of Washburn Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods softball team swept their doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with a 7-6 win over Sioux Falls and a 5-1 win against Missouri-St. Louis in the final day of the Washburn Invitational. The Ichabods went a perfect 5-0 through the Invitational weekend.
 
The Ichabods faced the Sioux Falls Cougars to start the day. Washburn began scoring with a Jaycee Ginter RBI single in the bottom of the second, but Sioux Falls answered in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Ichabods tied it up at 2 in the bottom of the fourth as Bri Francis scored on a Jenna Moore sacrifice fly. The Cougars shortly jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but the Ichabods answered to tie it up again in the bottom of the inning. After keeping Sioux Falls scoreless in the top of the sixth, Washburn tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the inning on a Ginter two-run homerun and a Marrit Mead two-run double to take a 7-3 lead. The Cougars scored three more runs to make it a close game but the Ichabods held on to take a 7-6 win over Sioux Falls in the first game.
 
Washburn closed out the day with a matchup against Missouri-St. Louis. The Ichabods opened scoring in the bottom of the first as Autymn Schreiner smacked a two-RBI double to give the team a 2-0 lead. Washburn then extended its lead to 3-0 in the third as Ginter scored on a Moore sacrifice fly.  Raegan Hamm held the Tritons hitless through the first three innings but they got their first two hits and scored a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-1 Washburn. The Ichabods scored two more runs on a RBI single by Mead and a sac fly by Kamryn Garvie in the bottom of the sixth to ensure the 5-1 victory over Missouri-St. Louis and doubleheader sweep.
 
Washburn heads to Emporia, Kan., next weekend to participate in the Emporia State Classic on March 5-7. The Ichabods will begin the tournament facing Southwest Baptist on March 5 at 3 p.m. at Cannon Field. They will also face Minnesota State-Mankato, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Wayne State and Quincy in the tournament.
