ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Washburn men's tennis team defeated the No. 9 nationally ranked Flagler Saints, 6-1, on Wednesday at the Flagler Tennis Center. This win marks the Ichabods' third win over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Washburn opened the match by taking the doubles point for an early advantage.
Paul Haase and
Miquel Perez defeated their opponents from court two with a score of 6-1, then the duo of
Bradley Eidenmueller and
Sebastian Pjontek won their match by 7-6 (7-3) from the top of the lineup.
In singles action,
Marc Roura Casi earned the Ichabods first singles point from the bottom of the lineup by scores of 6-4 and 6-4. Eidenmueller then took down his opponent from the No. 4 spot by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Haase clinched the Ichabods' win with a 7-5, 7-5 victory at the third spot in the lineup. After a tough loss by
Raul-Alin Dicu at the top of the lineup, Perez persevered through a tough battle at the No. 2 spot to overcome his opponent by scores of 2-6, 6-4, and 6-4.
Daniel Bird closed the match out from the fifth spot as he battled it out to defeat his opponent with scores of 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4, leading Washburn to a 6-1 victory over No. 9 Flagler.
The Ichabods close out their road trip with a matchup against No. 15 Valdosta State on Thursday. The match is set for 1 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
