BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior pole vaulter Virgi Scardanzan became the first Ichabod to score points in the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championship with a second-place finish en route to All-American honors. Freshman 60m hurdler Romain Henry has moved into the Saturday final setting a school record in the event in a time of 8.07. Senior Rachael Mayberry finished in a tie for 12th in the pole vault in her school record fourth NCAA Indoor Championship appearance.
The performance by Scardanzan was the best showing by an Ichabod in the NCAA era in either the indoor or outdoor championships with her second-place finish. Scardanzan cleared 3.80m on her second attempt and both 3.95m and 4.05m (13-03.50) on her first attempt on each height before bowing out at 4.15m (13-07.25). Only Ellianne Kimes from Grand Valley State cleared 4.15m.
Mayberry, who was competing in here fifth overall NCAA Championship and her fourth indoor - both more than any other Ichabod male or female - finished 12th after clearing 3.80m on her first attempt before going out at 3.95m.
Henry moved onto the 60m hurdles finals with a school-record setting time of 8.07 breaking his own school mark of 8.08 set at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 27 at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility. Saturday's finals are scheduled for 2:30.
Henry was the sixth-fastest qualifier for the finals behind Trevor Bassitt of Ashland who ran a time of 7.78.
This season, Henry has had times of 8.07, 8.08, 8.12, two times of 8.13, 8.19 and two times of 8.21. In his first season as an Ichabod, Henry has the nine-fastest times in the 60m hurdles in school history.
