WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Washburn Ichabods picked up a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Southwestern Oklahoma State winning the opener 10-5 and then taking the nightcap 8-4. The Ichabods will be back in action in Bethany, Okla., on Wednesday taking on Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Christian in single games.
Game 1 – WU 10, SWOSU 5
The Ichabods (13-3) led from the very start as
Marrit Mead led off the game with her first collegiate home run on the third pitch of the game as Washburn jumped out to the 1-0 lead. In their next at bat, the Ichabods scored three time all coming with two outs. After an
Autymn Schreiner single to center and a
Maddie Stipsits single to right, a
Kimi Patterson walk loaded the bases and Mead connected on a single of her own driving in one.
Hadley Kerschen connected on a 2-RBI single as Washburn went up 4-0.
The Bulldogs (5-8) scored twice in the bottom of the second cutting Washburn's lead in half, but the Ichabods came with two more on a solo home run by
Jaycee Ginter and after
Bri Francis reached on a fielder's choice and Schreiner was hit by a pitch, Stipsits doubled scoring Francis as the Ichabods went up 6-2.
In the fourth, Kerschen was hit by a pitch and then moved to second on a single by Ginter. Friend then singled loading the bases. Francis drove in Kerschen on a single and then Schreiner's double to left scoring Friend and Ginter. Patterson then singled driving in Schreiner as Washburn went up 10-2.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth as the Ichabods won the opener 10-5.
Six different Ichabods had two hits in the game and Mead, Kerschen and Schreiner each drove in two.
Reagan Hamm tossed four innings to improve to 8-2 striking out three.
Game 2 – WU 8, SWOSU 4
After a scoreless first inning, the Ichabods scored one in the top of the second when Stipsits doubled to lead off the inning and after moving to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a sac fly by Francis as the Ichabods took a 1-0 lead.
In the third,
Brianna Fuchs reached on an error by the second baseman and then advanced to second on a single by Mead. Kerschen drew a four-pitch walk loading the bases. Ginter drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Stipsits singled loading the bases. Francis recorded her second sac fly of the day and then Schreiner singled to center driving in Ginter.
Kamryn Garvie doubled to center as the Ichabods went up 6-0.
The Ichabods scored one in the fourth on a sac fly by Kerschen scoring Mead who singled and then stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth cutting the lead to 7-4.
Washburn added another run in the seventh to go up 8-4 on an RBI single by Garvie that scored Ginter who led off the inning with a walk.
Ginter took the win in the circle improving to 5-1 and Hamm pitched two innings of scoreless relief collecting her first save of the season. Mead had two hits as did Stipsits and Schreiner and Francis, Schreiner and Garvie each drove in two.
For the series, Stipsits and Schreiner and Mead all had four hits and Schreiner drove in four while Francis and Kerschen each had 3 RBI. Ginter scored four runs.
