TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn baseball team fell to Northeastern State, 13-6, in the series opener on Saturday at Falley Field.
The Ichabods (5-9, 5-5 MIAA) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with four runs on three hits.
Kros Bay led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on
Peter Shearer's bunt single. A sacrifice bunt by
Cole Emerson put both runners in scoring position and Bay scored on De Leon's sacrifice fly. A throwing error committed by the short stop allowed
Eric Hinostroza to reach safely and bring home Shearer. Next up was
Brett Ingram, who was intentionally walked.
Parker Dunn made the RiverHawks pay for that decision as he sent the first pitch he saw to deep right center for a two-run double.
The RiverHawks (9-3, 7-3 MIAA) got within one after a three-run homer by Reid Fehr in the top of the sixth.
Washburn got two runs back in the home half of the sixth with a two-out, two-run double to the left field fence by De Leon to make it 6-3 in favor of Washburn.
Northeastern State knotted up the score with three runs in the seventh inning and then took its first lead of the game with three more runs in the eighth. The RiverHawks closed out the scoring with four runs on five hits in the ninth.
De Leon finished the day 2-4 and with three RBI. Dunn also had two hits and drove in two runs. Tyler Clark-Chipparelli, Bay, and Emerson all went 1-3 and scored one run.
Between the two teams, a combined 16 pitchers appeared in the contest. The RiverHawks' Lee Callison picked up the win after tossing a scoreless seventh before his team took over in the top of the eighth. Juliana Zamora received the loss.
The series will wrap up tomorrow (Sunday) with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
